You can't stuff human beings into a levy, they won't stay that long, they will float. They will stay but only after they decompose enough to stop making gas, its the gas that brings them to the surface, it usually takes about 3 days for them to come to the surface.

Care to change your mind?: There are 5 or 6 that could be used to 'fill' the dike if you could weigh them down or something. Other trash will surface soon. Yeah..I know Mike.. I am on top of the news and I can only cry for the poor ba$tards... but it doesn't change my mind about plugging the hole with dead bodies, well may be a few crack heads wouldn't hurt but the thing is... they would only decay and cause more trouble later. I say plant them in the back yard of FEMA.
I agree with filling it in but by the time they get done with it and rebuilt, it will have probably been cheaper to fill it in with money and build on top of it. Im not talking nickles and dimes, were talking large bills. Just watch the curuption come out of the woodwork filling their pockets. Now to think of it you better get Jimmy Carter out there building a new city so he can brag about it to other countries when he is there trashing the USA.
RUBBISH No is already below sea level: they can use the debris to build the city above sea level

Care to change your mind?: Violence boiled over when 14 contractors on their way to help plug the breech in the 17th Street Canal came under fire as they traveled across a bridge under police escort, said John Hall, a spokesman for the Army Corps of Engineers. Police shot at eight people carrying guns, killing five or six, Deputy Police Chief W.J. Riley said. None of the contractors was injured, authorities said There are 5 or 6 that could be used to 'fill' the dike if you could weigh them down or something. Other trash will surface soon.
At the price of lumber, could they recycle some of it?

With all the money pouring in why not buy brooms and cleaning supplies and hire those outside of the superdome? You got it bud, you want money? Go back in and clean it up. It's dirty work but then they can begin on the rest of the city, a block at a time working with the city, state, whatever. They need work, the young and strong, man or woman, just like back in the depression. People jumped at the chance to work back then. WPA and all the rest of the projects. Many still exist today with a marker. So lets put these sunburnt individuals to work. They could make work camps rather than refugee (oops, can't call them that, it is evacuees.) sites. Why let em all sit around and compain about the rations?
Originally posted by icemeister leave in place and fill in above it then rebuild. make new orleans 30' above sea level . While this is logical thinking, it doesn't address the fact that the majority of property in the city is privately owned and those owners have rights. The government would have to condemn the entire city and take it by eminent domain for the betterment of the city and offer it up to developers...........wait, this is starting to sound familiar. they could still own their property it would just be 40' higher.
LOL!!

I don't know.... I'm beginning to wonder if New Orleans will ever recover. Who & why would anyone want to move back? They have nothing to go back to. Might as well begin a whole new life elsewhere.

leave in place and fill in above it then rebuild. make new orleans 30' above sea level . My thoughts, exactly.
Originally posted by amickracing Ok, since many many (many) square miles, thousands of houses etc are all garbage. Where are people going to haul this rubble off to? I know it's kind of putting the cart ahead of the horse right now to be thinking of this, but I'm curious. leave in place and fill in above it then rebuild. make new orleans 30' above sea level .
Originally posted by workhorse ...Not always, and usually not in the near future. 10 years after Andrew there were still piles, very large piles of debris stacked up on lots right in the middle of Homestead. During Charley last year wiped out the town of Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda. After a year of rebuilding there are still piles everywhere. The landfills couldn't handle it and can take only so much at a time. They burn alot of the debris but then enviromentolists complain of the pollution the smoke produces. The wreckage will be seen there for years and years to come. That's quite possibly due to FEMA money being cut off. That happened here last year. The city didn't want to do anything that wasn't federally subsidized.
Originally posted by icemeister They usually separate the vegetation debris (trees, etc), demolition material and garbage. The trees and such get piled up locally in parks and other public properties awaiting mulching. The rest goes to the regular land fills and temporary Mt. Trashmores.
