Dunno much about fridges, but had a camper ac that sounded like a bird was caught in the fan.....turns out the squirrel cages are made of plastic and this one was cracked.

Speaking of washers...I just bought a "smart" front load washer, hooked up the cold side water inlet (don't have a hot line plumbed to it) selected cold water cycle and hit start....the dumb thing kept switching back to the hot water selection and wouldn't wash since there was no hot water....so I switched the cold water hose to the hot water hookup on the washer......works like a champ.

I guess it hasn't been that long since I have had to do something with this fridge. I came back to this thread for a trip down memory lane. I had to work on the GE again recently. The ice chute weight was rusted up again. I cleaned it again. Also, one day I was getting ice and some white plastic chunks came out with the ice. Since then, when you get ice you really get ice. I mean it just fills your glass in 1 second. This is good if you like it icy. I don't like ice that much. Now I just skip the ice a lot of the time.

I bought some wasp spray at Lowes, pretty cheap, was on a roof being attacked, I'm spraying the hell out of them, they keep coming back at me.
I told the guy with me, this is probably the only thing made in China that doesn't kill anything.

I totally just owned this GE. It was actually pretty easy, about 15 minutes for the whole repair. I took the control panel ice chute thing apart and got the solenoid coil out and the plunger was just hanging there from the ice chute flap arm. It was all rusted to hell. Took it downstairs and spent a couple minutes on the bench grinder/buffer and get it all shiny again. Sprayed a quick coat of white lithium grease on it and slapped 'er back together. Works good as new.....for the moment.

I guess the old ice trays in the freezer and opening the door every time you want ice is the way to go. Lots less to go wrong with that setup, and just slightly less convenient.

Well my new whirlpool already had some issues.
Ice dispenser quit, I checked it out, looked like little auger type motor. Guy came out, said it was the motor, ordered one, they sent it here, he said to call him when it came in, I put it in myself even though it was under warranty.

Amazing. It's been over a year since my GE fridge has let me down. Who doesn't get a thrill when your fridge works for a whole year at a time? The current problem is the ice chute flap doesn't close after you ice up your glass. It's just sits there gaping open letting moisture and warm air into the freezer, which tests my defrost system repairs no doubt.

I'll be replacing the solenoid for the flap very soon.

In related appliance stories, the 20 year old Tappan microwave over my stove has finally gone to meet its maker (new one will not be GE). And the Kitchen Aid Range (gas) has requested its third oven ignitor in just under 10 years. Meanwhile, the 25 year old Caloric (electric) junker range I use to brew beer is still working fine. Albeit with a temperature knob calibration that gives you 100 degrees more than you ask for, but now that I know that it bakes just fine.

If its one of shorter or narrower ones like we had, they make a Whirlpool, side by side that fits right in there, even a hair smaller.
Nice smooth front on the doors so it is easier to clean and a bigger freezer space thanks to a compact, fast production ice maker.
    Keep us in the loop.

My other GE story was a wall mount microwave/hood over a cooktop.
Lasted 2 years, tried to fix it, called GE.
No warranty, send a tech out for $79.
It only costs like $250. Dumped that too and bought a new one.

Throw away world I tell ya.

That's how I ended up with this craptastic GE, it was the one that fit the space I had for it.

I'll post back here with the end of the GE saga so that others can learn from our horrible GE experience.

We had a certain space for it to fit in. Lowes had some models for that but they had to be ordered. Well, ya need a fridge sooner than a week.
I was leaving when the guy found the exact one I wanted in the back, scratch and dent. Still in the plastic wrap and all but a forklift had bent the bottom on the one side. Very minor. The side would be against a cabinet so you couldn't even see the dent. They took off another 15% and delivered it the next day.
    Just don't buy a GE.

Julie likes what you are saying. Time to exercise the Lowe's emergency card.

Who wants a great deal on a GE fridge?

Have Dave and or Julie.............pretty funny. Same thing with my 7-8 year old GE, frozen evap, box at 50 degrees.
That was 3 months ago, I just dumped the thing and bought another one, screw it, enough is enough. Ya can get a similar one for about a grand, I did not however buy a GE though.
I been saying for years, its a throw away world for appliances anymore.
New one works great, got some better features, quit wasting your dough, go to Lowes or Best Buy and be done with the torture already.

The GE is acting up again. The fridge side is 50 degrees, yup the coil is frozen over. Took it apart and blew at it with the hair dryer for 15 minutes and bolted it back together. That was two weeks ago. Tonight, same story. Last time I chaulked it up to a pierogi-fest with high humidity in the kitchen doing its thing to the moisture sensitive GE. Now, I think it wants more parts.

So far I've put an evap fan motor and a defrost heater in it. I ohmed this heater out and it appears to still be good. I don't know if I even want to go any further with this boat anchor. It's going to be 8 years old this year...

My fridge is working good, the plastic ice maker auger broke up a bit. I have an extended warranty and the GE guy came the next day, looked at it and oredered me a new one, they sent it out in a few days and I put it in. No problem.
Everything is cheaper these days, my old GE's ran great, it's just a matter of the new engineering and all that crap. The GE guy said new ones will have transformers to bulk the power up to 230 volt, split phase or something like that. It's bad enough they use dc motors now this newfangled crap. I never used to buy extended warranties but I would recommed it on some of these big ticket items, like fridges or hdtv's.

The repair guy said it was the defrost heater. He wanted over $200 to put a new one in. We happily paid him the $65 service call/diagnostic fee and I will put a new defrost heater in when I get home. It has to defrost anyway. I was betting on a refrigerant leak or compressor issue and I lost the bet. I couldn't see all the ice built up behind the evaporator cover. Next time I'll take it apart first.

Next thing to fix is the intermittent solenoid for the water in the door thingie. The GE has a voracious appetite for parts, the Whirlpool has only needed a new thermostat so far.
