If you only take a hose and a jug of refrigerant to charge a system and ,wait for the sudden burst of cold to let you know it's full.

I hope my dislike vote wasn't a reason for that. Now no one will know the way things shouldn't be done.

You might be a hack if you think that a variable pitch pulley is a multi belt size pulley so if you only have an A belt in the truck you just turn it in a couple turns. Then when your journeyman tells you it is for fine tuning RPM to get the proper CFM and load on a motor. Then you argue with him until he goes back with the proper B belt and notices he burned out the motor and blames it on bad bearings. Then takes the motor off the slide mount with channel locks and a ball peen hammer, snaps a bolt off the slide mount. Then goes to remove the pulley, drenches it with WD40 and drenches the work bench, tools, gloves with it.. Then when he can't get it off with the ball peen he gets a bigger ball peen then when that doesn't work he gets the pullers out and snaps all the sheaves only to finally realize that there is two set screws and a key way that he forgot to loosen... Then when I told him to read about variable pitch pulleys he comes back to me and says you may be right but they are also for multi belt size purposes.................FML Face palm..

Is that hack enough for you guys. lol

I told him that he can refer to any of my books and manuals when ever he wants. I said the best way to learn is to read about a topic then practice hands on and then review back to the books until you know it front to back. Then if you keep practicing and reading you will truly understand what you know. His reply was, "I don't need books to learn, I learn by doin, reading is a waste of time.." So now if he argues me on something I will bet him money, I haven't payed yet, he learns the hard way.. hehe.

Those who sincerely believe that an ice machine is PM'ed by simply flipping the switch to "Wash", might be hacks.

You might be a hack if upon reading this you look up the word "hack" to understand its meaning. Or you watch the video in post 178 and used it as a training video. Or your main goal is to beat the price of the other hack you compete with.

I found this very amusing today.

I reckon that the several local techs that have the amazing fortune of over half their calls result in a new compressor are likely hacks. I have learned that when I get a call to go fix something behind one of them that I had better have a bunch of replacement screws for the covers, also. There are two other local guys in this town and a bunch in the neighboring city. Most do good work, but the ones that don't are very much hacks. There is one specifically. Whenever I see his pick up and trailer, I know to stop by later and give the owner my card. One near by town where he had a monoply, I have been called for half the stores and the local super market. The other guy in this town that does good, now has the rest.

Hacks are everywhere, but don't take that to mean that I am the only good refrigeration guy. Most people around here do fine work. It's just that the hacks get around to more places than the good ones do. Hacks are fast. It amazes me how fast someone can seriously mess up a unit when they are commited to being a hack.

All we can do is report the videos that in some way violate YouTube's TOS, correcting the uploader via the comments won't work for long because they can censor us by deleting such comments or even disabling comments and ratings.

For example I report videos of "conversions" of gasoline engines to natural gas or LP where they just force-feed the engine a fixed amount of fuel with no demand/negative pressure/zero-governor regulator, IE the mixture ratio changes every time the throttle position does, wasting fuel, creating more lung damaging emissions, and potentially damaging the engine. Also if the engine stalls raw fuel continues to flow, resulting in a fire/explosion hazard. Similarly I commend the ones who do it right.

Except the camera battery convienently 'died during the evacuation', so you know there was none performed. No nitro purge was the best, worst thing he did in that video. Did you notice that his pressure test consisted of charging with R22.. That was the real odd ball in that Youtube masterpiece. The list goes on with the videos but it's just ridiculous that crap is out there and so accessable to people to DIY thinking they're getting some great advice from that jack***

Does this count? I got called on a walk in freezer that that last guy replaced the temp control on. He wired it to open on temp rise. Or the one that had a dedicated circuit on the LL sol valve so it never de-energized, not even on defrost.
