Dont change anything but the t-stat to a true pt# 831932. Just take out the defrost pins or if a grasslin timer move all the pins out so it doesnt defrost and bpass the fan delay. I've done this more than once and it works fine. The compressor wont short cycle, it will cycle as needed just like it would if it was a freezer.

The biggest thing with True equipment is the True tstat must match the the coil temp. So use a true cap tube and watch your charge. The tstat drops down to about 20F then warms up to about 40F to defrost its coil. True tstats have a very big differantal. Or you can use a Ranco design it anyway ya want.
Going to a freezer is a little harder....lol. Replace the condenser, evap coil, cap tube, add fan delay/term kixon, add defrost heaters, defrost timer, door heaters, condensate pan heater ohh yea... tstat! So like ammoniadog said....lol

Swap out condensing unit, evaporator, metering device, and cold control with ones designed for a freezer. Install a CPR valve. Add a defrost heater, drain line heater, hi-limit, fan delay, and time clock. Change the door switches to the type that will shut off the fans when you open the door. Find a way run a bunch of extra wires from the bottom of the unit to the top. Find a tech that is willing to do this and plan to pay him at least twice as much as a new freezer would cost.

Fridge to Freezer?

I have a True t-23 refrigerator what are the steps to convert it to a freezer?

I did something like what you are thinking of doing not too long ago. It was a True 3 door freezer with a siezed up K-body Copelamatic. The customer wanted it to be a cooler. I strongly recomended to get a new unit, but he insisted for me to fix it and make it work as a cooler. If I remember right, the origional compressor was 3/4 hp and 404a. I replaced it with a 1/3 hp r22 condensing unit and hacked in a txv to replace the cap tube. I removed the door switches and fan delays so that the fans would keep running, replaced the cold control wth a Ranco A12-701, got rid of the CPR and the defrost heaters, removed the pins from the defrost timer, and disconnected the door heaters.

I told the guy before hand that it wasn't worth all of the effort, but he didn't care. It took me about 6 hours to do. It was actualy a fun little project, and to my suprise, it seemed to work good when I was done with it.

Would make one hell of a smoker if it wont work for your beer

What made you think of bearings being worn out?

Yup I agree with all the above. You can never have to much evaporator or condenser really.

True coolers use R134a, while their freezers use R404a.

Change the cap tube, drier, condensing unit, switch to R134a, disable fan delay, defrost, etc., install the coil sensing stat, and then I think it would work. The evaporator from the freezer should work OK I think.

OK I'm being a party pooper, sorry, you could definitely try just switching the compressor, refrigerant, and t-stat (still need to disable fan delay) and try it out. Let us know how it works.

True T23-F Conversion

Hey guys, I recently acquired this True Freezer from a customer since the compressor was going out and they didn't want to pay to repair it.

Anyways I like my beer quite a bit and already have a Keg-o-rator but its on its last leg and old. I am going to try to convert this thing into a fridge, I already have a tstat out of a regular T23 (fridge) and since the compressor is done, what do you all think about swapping the compressor to a fridge unit.

This this would work? I was going to just swap compressors to another freezer and use the fridge tstat but I was concerned about the compressor lasting being short cycled in a fridge environment.

What do you think, could a swap to a fridge compressor and t-stat make this a viable fridge? At least a good enough one to be a badass keg-o-rator?
