Napoleon fireplace GD1800-NM mercury flame switch WS660-4

Do you know what the part looks like? Where can I find a photo of the part, so that I know what I am looking for. I want to make sure whether it is really missing on my fireplace. I am not sure what I am looking for.

Flame switch is a part that is installed at the factory when the fireplace is built. If it is missing then someone removed it at some point in time. There have not been any of these available in years. Sorry but I think you are looking at a new fireplace.

Napoleon fireplace GD1800-NM mercury flame switch WS660-4

I have a Napoleon gas fireplace that was installed in 1992. Apparently the contractor never installed the memory/mercury flame switch. I have other parts that have failed and unless I find the switch, Napoleon will not sell me any new parts and they obviously do not have any mercury switches in stock. My fireplace is model GD 1800-NM and I believe the switch part number is WS 660-4. Do you happen to have a switch available or know where I can find one. We are selling our home and trying to avoid the cost of replacing the entire unit. Can anyone out there help?

Gap, have you talked to your gas inspectors where you are? Will they allow this as a replacement part?

You should read the thread for a full explanation, but the short answer is your options vary depending on where you are, which fireplace you have and if the manufacturer has a retro kit available. Find your fireplace brand, model, and serial number and contact the manufacturer. If the manufacturer no longer exists you are hooped.

Where I am (Canada, BC) only manufacturer certified components can be used to repair these, and you cannot just replace the switch the entire flame safety system including the valve and the pilot assembly must be replaced. The replacement parts must be manufacturer certified, adhere to applicable safety standards, and include certified instructions.

There is a good chance the entire fireplace has to be replaced or decommissioned.

I can't find a cross reference to WR. The Hunter part # from the manual is 916243. Also there is a Keating part that looks identical

Actually, you are probably right, I think mercury has been outlawed in Canada. Definitely no mercury thermostats available any more. Do you have the right one for Hunter fireplace?

I know that a lot of them are new, a lot of them are different part numbers, some of them are used, but good. How about I get em all together and send them to you? Is there gonna be any problem sending mercury to you in Canada?

Before I purchase an overpriced mercury switch (if I can find one), I want to be sure that the switch is the problem. The fireplace pilot will light but when I let the valve control out, the flame dies. If I short between the 2 poles of the switch, shouldn't the pilot flame stay burning as if it was sensing heat?

Rob is correct: The original gas direct vents were tested and listed under ANSI Z21.50 as vented decorative appliances-not vented room heaters. Therefore, they were never intended for continuous unsupervised operation such as off a thermostat. The new Z21.88 vented room heater std. required a 30 second pilot dropout over the old 180 second dropout. Too many cases where the unit would go out, someone would get up, walk over and hit the igniter and BOOM! Glass shrapnel everywhere.

I would recommend using only components tested and listed by the mfr.. If the mfr. is busted, pull the unit or stick flowers in it. I've seen way too many units "fixed" with similar components only to fail or go Poof! I've investigated too many cases where people were blown across a room, knocked unconscious, blinded or burned from not playing by the book.

I thought these were long gone... They've been phased out of other products a while ago.

I agree with hearthman - Good riddance!
