Factory states between 30-50k. Especially if unit surges a bunch and perform oil sampling and watch tin levels. If new machine with REB vibration test

Thanks I found a old task book , no 19x series, the closest is a 19ea , it just shows after 3 years of runtime.

Another vote for if it aint broke and the oil testing is good let it run.
Have some at 70K+ hours, but did discuss with the owner its time to tear down and inspect.
Now they are trying to find their wallet lol.

    holliea01,
You should go forward with the diagnostics (oil analysis and vib) to get an understanding of units health to see what you will be discovering on a tear down since the owner is adamant about a bearing inspection. We have 17&19 FA units and my discussion with a local vendor rep is that a rule of thumb for the overhaul interval 40k hours. My discussion with this vendor on bearing wear indicated that full load operation will result in minimal bearing wear. Low load/surging would have an impact on bearing life.
I have tried to find the ST6 manual myself as indicated in a previous post but with no success, hence the rule of thumb input stated above.
I will look in to what manuals I have that may be of use to you when I return to work next week.
I would also suggest that you look into subcontracting with a carrier vendor to support your tear down efforts, this would give you the exposure to tech and vendor document expertise for the first go around to give your customer what he wants.

ESS Chill Water I just took over a contract that has 4 1000 Ton 19xr's. The customer is asking about performing a bearing inspection on each machine. The machines are 5 years old. I have not had a chance to make it over and get the hours off the machines yet. I know for certain that one machine has pretty much ran nonstop from startup. which should put around 30,000 to 40,000 hours on it. The others will have slightly less. I spoke to him about allowing me to perform some predictive diagnostic (Vibration and oil) and then go from there but he is pretty adamant about performing the inspection. I also would like any information/Literature that you have on the ST1,ST3 and ST6 as well as a teardown manual if possible. I am a York mechanic primarily with probably 60% of my work being on York machines and 30% on Tranes and then the last 10% on Carriers. So forgive me for my ignorance on some of the Carrier recommendations. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I'll first start out by saying, like I had in an earlier post on this thread, that I prefer the use of analytical tools (oil analysis, vibration testing).

Talking to a well respected veteran in the business on the subject once, he asked me "if you went to the doctor for a physical, would you have the doctor check your heart with a stethoscope and some blood work or open your chest up to have a look?"

    .Great analogy for me...

To answer your question about the ST1,3 and 6 intervals. Carrier's old task books did have recommended bearing inspection intervals such as high speed bearing inspections and the Stop Major (complete compressor diassembly and bearing inspection) on ALL 17/19 series machines, but I haven't seen a Carrier Task book in years...

It's kinda funny to see now on Carrier's own website that they offer BOTH "predictive services" AND "scheduled comprehensive inspection services"

I interpret this as talking out of both sides of their mouth...

But maybe some would see it as good business practice. Let the customer decide kind of thing...

    Hello Oscar,
Did you ever get the ST1, ST3, ST6 info from ESS and if you did, can you share it with me?
I spoke to our local carrier rep about getting a copy of the ST6 to validate the 30k hours/overhaul requirement run time hour interval for our 17FA and 19 FA and he told me it doesnot exist except by word of mouth.
Thanks for any help on this issue.

The 19XR is very similar to the DK ,especially if it has the older Kingsbury design Thrust assembley just like the D series which Carrier has the 3 year and 6 year inspection in the old green task code book and the new gray one. but that being said

I've had to teardown some19XR chillers with as little as 18,000 hours that the low speed shaft had already gotten into the bull gear and rotor on the low speed thrust end of the bearings, Most of the ones I've seen damaged this way you can find the alarm history full of surge, high condenser press , and so on.
Some of the bearingsI've changed seem to have a little copper plating. I would agree about oil analysis, vibration analysis,

I would also say around 10 years or 25,000 hours for a little preventive maintance even if vibe and oil checks OK I would schedule a teardown and replace all the orings, gaskets and seals including the ones on the fittings and oil heater
