My saftey switch broke off a long time ago, and not on purpose. Good thing i dont use or trust the temp feature on the sc56. However i love my sc56 for a troubleshooting meter, once less meter to carry.

To be clear, I use the meter on every call, but its a little too unhandy as a thermometer. On the flip side, I like the fast response of the low mass t-couple for air temps.
So there isn't any potential electrical path between the jacks for the meter test leads, and the plug for the thermocouple? Even if there is no direct connection, I'd imagine you can forget about the cat. III rating of the meter.

The switch is there because UL requires it now. This wasn't a requirement when we designed some of the other Fieldpiece meters like the SC76 and SC77 so that is why those don't have a switch.
