It's that way around here. Corn stoves and furnaces are really taking off here. When we decided to become a dealer we were the first real HVAC company to start carrying and servicing them. Before it was just a few little hole-in-the-wall places or farmers selling but not serivcing the things. I sort of felt bad for about 30 seconds or so when the factory rep told us that they are taking away the territory from the others so only we could carry thier line. It was a nice moral booster too. As far as fireplaces, we gave that up a long time ago, too hard to compete with Menard's builder units. Although, now we do carry corn and pellet burning inserts for builder grade fireplaces...they have a 54,000btu/h output, so now the buildergrade fireplaces can be converted into a nice viable heat source.
I would be thinking....... Hey, at least they'll be no surprises if I become a dealer. Very upfront company.
I would be thinking.......
Agreed. But I never was a fireplace dealer. Maybe they really have protected territories which is a good thing if you decide to become a dealer. Did you check over on the fireplace forum here on this site to see how the expert fire place guys work their dealerships. This could be normal practice in that end of "heating" and you are getting upset about nothing.
I spent a few hours researching gas fireplaces on the net last week. When I finally found a brand I liked I called the sales rep. I told him I would like some info on his units and asked about becoming a dealer. He told me that the closest dealer for the specific brand I was interested in was 100 miles from me but that there was a local dealer that sold one particular model of this brand. He said there should be no problem with becoming a dealer and he would be up in my area within a few weeks and would contact me after he spoke to the other dealers. I asked him why he needed to speak to them and he said that he wanted to run the idea of my company selling this brand through them first to get their approval. Is it me or is there something wrong with this. It really pisses me off that he would even say this to me. I'm waiting for him to show up so that I can tell him that after interviewing three other reps I decided to go with one of them. (kinda like the tv commercial where the HO's interview loan companies.) This just does'nt seem like something a rep should tell anyone.
