The big name stuff isn't any better. Carrier had their leaking evap coils, and before that, their faulty compressors. Trane had their defective txvs. Everything is the same garbage these days

We've got 2 coils to replace tomorrow in Westinghouse air handlers, both of them are about 5 years old.

hmm i hope this isnt the case as ive swicthed my main brand to tappan over the last two seasons and so far no callbacks for leaks, actually only one real callback for a noisy blower and it wasnt really a problem as it turned out to be a vibration from a refrigerant line vibrating on the ceiling stud, and have one in my house which is going into its third summer with no issues.

Unlike mark I actually think these units especially the outdoor units are some of the quiets and well built units ive ever seen and that includes big 3 brands i believe they rival trane , however i can see where the indoor units can appear less built then some of the new trane AHs but really ive seen worse in goodman, carrier/bryant, and others. I mean at least Nordyne have a thick drain pan with a nice metal kickstand for the coil to be propped as opposed to the dreaded meatal clips and screws and thin pans that crack at the thread. I also dont see a big difference in metal thickness for the cabinets etc, so Mark what are you comparing these too? i mean all the bryant/carrier AH have all the insulation being pulled off the interiors, x13 motors dropping like flies and hard to get sometimes as well as many bad caps but thats just the new norm in the industry, goodman well all the cracked pans and cheap cabinets, and lennox while nice ,lets get real finding parts available in the summer is a headache and i have replaced more compressors and fan motors on the 13hp/ac lines the last 5 years its hard to stand up for them, and im sure i can list faults in many other brands so im just curious what you are comparing it to?

The base warranty is better then anybody elses with the quality pledge its an easy sell..

I do think that Nordyne needs better labor rates for warranty because the only experiaence ive had was with the blower/wheel i replaced , just to be sure , and all the gave me was 75$ and i wasnt happy about that as i believe thats a 2 plus hour job in total and i should have got closer to 200 for labor so i can see thats is a major issue with them going forward but i hope to not have to file many and find out the frustrations you guys have went through to date.

had a couple of the micro channel coils on westinghouse units leak at the fitting i know i had them tight at replacement, will put small amount of oil on the threads from now on dist rep said that will take care of it. one problem we have is during replacement of the package unit coils usually the drain pans are cracked. got caught on one last week will not happen again. will always order drain pan sometimes you can tell if they are cracked sometimes you can not till coil is out.we have already changed about 12 this spring

The new coils are aluminum and do not have the corrosion issues.

I installed hundreds of the old coils and only had two leakers. one was 7 years old and one was 1. I also do not do any new construction so my installs are not exposed to the off gassing of new building materials, so I suspect that had something to do with it.

Is anyone seeing leaking c7 microchannel coils? I've put in a few and have not had any issues yet. Fingers crossed.

Yes, that air handler has micro channel coil.

Nah, everyone is having trouble. We ran through a slug of Rheem N coils when production first moved south. Carrier's Mexican coils have leaked for years. Toward the end of Trane's copper tube coils we started to see an increase in failures on them too.

Haven't checked into this thread in a while. First warm spell of the season, and we have already found our third Westinghouse unit with a coil leak - in the last week and a half alone. Luckily r410a has come down so far in cost, that it's not as big of an issue as before - but still.

officemanager: our rep gave us the same run-around at first, until we stopped selling their equipment. we saw MAYBE a few hundred at best, before being told that we weren't getting anything else.

the coil redesign just reeks of oops-we-messed-up to me. i'm still holding out hope for some sort of legal action against Nordyne, but it will probably never come to fruition.

We've had a few C6's leak lately. Annoying. And yes, replaced plenty of boards due to condensate leaks. We put in some Aspen coils Nordyne sold and those were chronic for leaking water in the downflow position above the MB blowers. Had a number of Rheem N coils leaking too. Sure hope the C7's hold up. I might just have to ask about labor help next C6 leaker we find.

lakeside.....We have sold a lot of these coils and we are finding leaking coils in 50% or more. We complained (very loudly) to our rep and he told us that we would be compensated for refrigerant and $150. per unit....That being said, we have been compensated only $370 and still owed over 5K. Personally, I believe that was just talk to shut us up. We, naturally, passed the credit to the customer that we were promised and now here we are with pretty much no compensation.

I have been searching the internet to find somewhere to complain or take some sort of action. We found 2 more leaking coils last week and now 3 this week so far.

Has anyone heard of a recall or how would one initiate such a thing. Would a call/mail/email to the EPA do any good? Nordyne knows the coils are faulty - yet does nothing. Freon leaks surely would not be well received by the EPA.

I have been called on two nordyne a/h's a year or so old, that another contractor installed. Both units had leaks on the evap coil.

The board lies horizontal directly beneath the hole for the wiring to the fan motor. The coils have frozen and subsequently thawed and taken out the boards. The only design they could have done worse would to have been making the board part of the condensate trap!

I have sold 100's of C3 C5 C6 C7 coils in last 5 years with no problems. hope i just got lucky.

To OP... I work for warranty co. and was manning the phones for over a year until about 6 months ago. I heard enough Nordyne contractors mention they have been having problems with evap coils to be past coincidence in my opinion (as it rarely comes up with other OEMs). I hope the new design has been working better to resolve the issue and I'm sorry to hear about all the problems you have had.

We looked at Tappan, mainly out of interest in the IQ Drive system. After putting in a couple of basic systems, we bailed on it because of the glaringly obvious lack of quality design and construction of the the air handlers, Chinese capacitors, etc..
Later we started hearing about the horror stories with their indoor coils, made me glad we bailed on offering them.

The company I work for has experienced the same problems described with nordyne and no compensation. We have ate alot of freon cost too, needless to say we are not selling them anymore. We have made a few coil changes with the new design coil but only time will tell if the results of this design are better.
