There are a whole bunch of issues if this were to be installed in our location within code. Is this a Modine or some other manufacturer. Modines make some direct vent models and some power vent models. There were specific manufacturers recommendations/specifications for venting ie. b-vent or power vent that were or are to be followed and according to code we would have to install the specific unit according to manufacturers specifications. The best way to determine venting is to contact the manufacturer. If the unit is so old that it is no longer supported by the manufacturer or does not meet current code it may not be wise to intall it in another location,

It is important that you use a thimble if you are penetrating a combustible wall or roof.

If it is natural draft you can vent it out the sidewall, you will just have to turn the flue up once you get outside and terminate above the roofline. Are you putting a warehouse-sized unit heater in a small garage? I have only seen a few of those type of heaters (like the common Modine models) in my time that were small enough to put in a one or two car garage. It is probably 60-70% efficient as well.

Chances are anything atmospheric won't vent horizontally. They require the draft of a vertical flue. Will need a power vent kit which is pricey or run a b-vent out the roof.

Older Unit heater Venting qeustion

Hello all,

Ive got an older atmosheric type gas fired unit heater that I got from and old warehouse I used to work at and now I want to install it in a garage, My qeustion is I am not super familiar with venting and such and I want to make sure I do it correctly, There is no chimney and im looking to direct vent it out the side of a wood constructed building. How do I know if I need a power vent or not? what type of vent pipe do i need? Normally I would follow manufacturers reccomendations but due to the way i obtained it i am unable to find any info on it, Any help would be appreciated thanks.
