remote is a peice of cake

Go to your nearest hearth shop and tell them what you have - they can explain it all for you and it is easy to install, just keep the receiver away from the heat. And get the theremostat version of the remote to allow you to keep the room comfy by activating and de-activating the unit at any temperature you feel is comfortable. Just use the thermostat feature only when you are there to enjoy it. Remember not to leave the unit unattended.

Thanks guys, you are all wonderful. I actually got a Majestic UVL 18 RN model (logset). I contacted customer service, and they told me, the controls will be inside a flap on the front of the system. I FOUND IT NOW
So it has a wall switch, a gas knob, and valve controls.
Now I was told I can take a remote to this fireplace. Do you guys know, how easy or tough to replace the wall switch control with a remote control.

Gas Logs

I think I know this one. The log set is made of a burner assembly and a set of logs that rest upon it. Just below the front grate prongs is a flat panel that is on hinges at the bottom. Merely reach your finger behing the panel from either side and push forward. This will flip the panel down and expose the valve. This could either be a SIT valve or for a little older models, could be a honeywell valve. The ignition process is the same as a water heater except the logset has an ignitor attached to light the pilot. Turn to pilot, press the knob in and hold it in while continually pressing over and over the ignitor. When the gas is flowing strongly the pilot will ignite. Hold the knob in for at least 20 seconds before letting go. Once the pilot stays lit on its own, just rotate the knob counter clockwise to on and wait just a minute. Then the switch should work. If this is the first time the unit has been lit in a while it will smell a bit, you can vacuume the logs and check for loose dust before firing it up to reduce the effect. Also MAKE SURE THE LOGS DO NOT IMPINGE ON THE YELLOW FLAME. This could cause sooting. Also do not use candles in the house at the same time. That should do it.

A gas log kit can be a few things, the most basic is just a burner pan a grate and some logs. The shutoff valve is in the wall and you use a special key to turn it on, then you have to quickly light it with a lighter before too much gas gets into your house. This may be what you have since you cannot find any controls.

Most gas log kits has a valve in with them and a pilot. The valve would just have OFF / PILOT / ON for the settings on the knob. Check the walls nearby for a circular plate with a hole in the middle. Usually inside would be a square peg sticking out, you need a "key" that fits on it so you can turn it. Once opened gas may start coming out of the burner pan.

OK wow... after typing all that I reread your posts and I changed my mind, but that info COULD still be useful but I doubt it. Anyway.... is your basement finished? My next guess if that the controls are someplace else, like directly below the fireplace mounted on the ceiling. Sometimes there is even drywall over them with a removable grate to get at it. These are extra fun to light, take two people. It is no longer legal to do this (here anyway) but it was done quite a bit in the past. Also sometimes there is an access panel in the wall near the fireplace but I assume you would have found that by now.

First let me thank you for your reply.
I removed all logs and checked inside, I cannot find any control knobs. I even tried removing the top and bottom panels in the front of fireplace. My friend's fireplace has controls in the bottom panel. But the panels are fixed in my fireplace.

Yeh I got only one manual, and it seems like logset manual. I dont know what is Gas Log Kit. Its like regular fireplace with logs on top and a pilot plug. But I dont see pilot controls

I can send you a picture, may be it helps you in understanding, because I am total naive when it comes to fireplace.

there should be a removable panel underneath, usually Majestics have SIT style valve, so you should have a ON / PILOT / OFF knob, a hi -> lo flame knob and a pilot sparker. Turn the valve to PILOT and spark it till it lights, then hold the button in till it stays lit (usually 10-15 seconds).

Actually... that model number sounds more like the number of a log set. Is this a gas log kit? Where you basically have an open air combustion gas burner with some cement logs piled on a grate?

Hi,

I moved into this new home. I cannot find the control knobs to start my fireplace. I turn on the gas, but cannot find the pilot controls. All I have is a switch next to fireplace. I turn it on/off nothing happens. How do I turn on the pilot and start the fireplace?

The manual I got says its a MAJESTIC ventfree gas UVL (18/24)series. Can anyone guide me plzzzzzzzzz.
