Just asking, Those were almost indestructible, I had problems in the past ( not to recent past) with wipers on the pot in sensor was not touching or poor connection causing no op. Probably shouldn't even ask because the balancing relay is exposed so it's pretty easy to test, but just askin.

I would unscrew the cover of the plug in holding relay and push the contacts down to start
the comp on the multi function,but if I remember right if it had an oil pressure control I could not do that.On the regular you could use a screwdriver to jump it,or the brown relay has a little hole for your test lead to push in the relay. I remember the 30ga,I worked on a lot of the 50bb's all sizes and others. Worked for a very good Carrier dealer when I was a kid,learned a lot there! In those years if you could fix Carriers you could fix anything,Carrier was king at least over here!

I still have the multi function time guard control wiring for a 30GA burnt into my memory. The 30GA and CGAA were the chillers I cut my teeth on. I remember jumping B to B1 to get the compressor going when I didn't want to wait the 15 minutes. The last 30GA I worked on was in the summer of 2005.

Yea,that white thing all the to the right is the balancing relay,the other relay is the recycling relay so it don't start in the last position with everything on.

Yep ,time guard,multi function time guard,no two did the same thing or was wired the same.One of the first to use stator stat thermistors,pilot warp switch with sealed combustion chambers and much more!

I remember when you could buy the balancing relay assembly and just replace parts of the step controller.
It's a different world now.

Wow,Carrier Step Controller! Thats something from my childhood! I had a training manual on it from Carrier,got to look for it. You had to be good to work on Carriers in those days!

That machine should be almost 25-30 years old. Sounds like a good time to upgrade. I love work on the oldies. Its sad that the new units will never hit that life expectancy.

Worked on an air rotation unit that used that control. Had a class on it once. Thanks guys.

we converted a pair from the mechanical controls over to Honeywell staging controllers. Pretty straight forward and more reliable.
Standard module = 4 stages add a expansion module for an additional 4 stages

Ive used the Honeywell T775 with expansion modules to retrofit older Tranes that used the cam step controller with success. Might work for your Carrier as well..

Carrier step controller

I have a Carrier Chiller Model 30HS100-D600. Serial 9009J00484.
The old motor and cams assembly is in need of replacement. Local carrier dist. says no longer available. Looks like part # HH82AZ209.
