It is possible that this individual is sensitive to ozone. No harm in turning their ionizer off for a week and seeing what happens with the "experiment."

It does not sound like your HVAC system itself is the issue.

Sometimes one individual can cause a lot of problems when the problem is that individuals existence. You've got to be pragmatic in that situation. Is the problem systemic or is it isolated ? If it's one or two people out of a building loaded with people then it's not the building air.

I found out Consumer Reports did a study on the Ion fans. I passed the info on to my supervisiors and safety department. This whole thing is some kind of office/board politics. That's why it was done on a day the supervisors weren't in and the *safety people weren't invited. BTW the RTU has PSF on all the outside air, 2" Pleats, followed by Cartridge filters. Unit is clean inside. Also Triangles were cut out of the office walls and the sheet rock was mold free. VAV was clean, there is a CO2 control in the outer office. *I found out the person I thought was safety was not.

I went into a dog pound years ago about the dust and people being sick and when I was looking around I noticed a huge air ionizer thing sitting on a desk. It was like some kind of industrial type ionizer that one of the hayseed county officials had bought a bunch of real cheap.

I told them to unplug it for a week and see what happens......

All problems ended once that ionizer was turned off.

Not saying the ionizer is your problem but just suggest turning it off for a week and see what happens.

I don't think it's the tower fan motor. The amount of ozone it puts out is negligible and if it was causing an issue it would depend on the wind direction and whether or not your make-up air was pulling enough into the RTU to essentially poison someone.

It wouldn't be a consistent occurrence.

She may be having a allergic reaction to something around her, close to her office or a co-workers perfume or cologne.

Have the air professionally tested and they'll tell you exactly what's in your air.

We use dust lock II filter media in a couple of our buildings that's impregnated with a tacky substance and bio-cide.

This was a building that housed BOEING and Lockheed Martin with quite a few tenants complaining.

A professional came in and said the C02 levels were high but not dangerous.

Tower Fans and Ozone

We had to tour an office today with safety. The lady is complaining of nausa, burning eyes, nose and throat. Sometimes she has headaches. All which clear up after a short time outside. Wed. she went to the ER. The tour was a little too structured for me. Two things I couldn't help but notice, a filter type, that I've never seen before over the supply vent. Also a Bionaire tower fan that was fairly thick. It had a foam filter inside it, looked like it had a Ionizer indicator lamp. Looked for a number on it, but didn't see anything. A RTU serves a large area, and we don't really have any other complaints. She has her own VAV, with the only source of air from the RTU, no ceiling air is recirculated. Everything is three years old, and very clean. I'm thinking the tower fan is putting out Ozone.
