You got to walk in to as many shops as you possibly can at 7:45-8:00am, ask who the boss is be very confident that you are a hard worker and convince him to give you a job. You may not wana say your looking for a temp job and if you get it just try to balance school and work as best you can and worst comes to worst you slack off at work you get fired but at least you got a few days experience. I got fired from my first job and I had experience to get my second job.

Also never mention volunteer work. If you expect to be paid they will believe you are worth the money.

Yeah it is rough out there. I actually went to a couple HVAC Co.'s and they shot me down immediately even for volunteer work! I even went to the old folks home across the street to do volunteer work just to get out of the house and they even shot me down because I've got an 11 yo felony on my record. It's very discouraging. I've always had some kind of job since I was 12 so it's really hard on me not being able to work.... Get's me real unmotivated. Now I see why people are just giving up.
I hope Milwaukee doesn't become the next Detroit! It's not looking too promising. I don't think we are ever gonna recover from this economic collapse.

hey, i'm EPA-UNIVERSAL Certifed and a AS-Degree graduate student from MATC from a couple of years ago. I've moved to California and just recently moved back to Milwaukee and i cannot find anyone who is hiring......it's hard out there especially if you have a bad driving record. I had an Interview in California....everything went good, but the only thing was my driving record......that really bummed me out!!!

If anything, i would start off by just putting yourself out there and do a couple side jobs if you can. As for what i've been doing, i have a reg. 7-4 work schedule but when i'm off work, me and my uncle does side jobs for heating and cooling. He and some friends started their own company and started doing repair and installs, but now they're doing decent jobs like, bigger facilities other than residential work!! I've been just tagging along and helping them.....good money!!!

Overall, I am still looking around for TECH Jobs but haven't heard of any......most of them are looking for 4+ years so, i'm nowhere close to that yet.....hope that helps out a bit!!! let me know if you hear any JOBS out there also!!!

Thanks Mike. That's kinda what I'm looking to do. I'm well qualified in all area's except my driving record haunting me.....

I went through the same program in Eau Claire. My Instructor new some local business owners, and called around and set up for me and some of the other students to ride along with some local companies.

Need some advice. Want to get some 'hands on' over my winter break.?.

I am a current HVAC student in the Milwaukee area finishing up my first semester of a 2 semester (1 year) diploma program. I'm getting good grades, but am more of a hands on learner.
I am going to have 5 weeks off school starting next month. I am looking for advice on how I should go about looking for work in the HVAC field... I don't care about pay, I'm more or less trying to get some experience and have something to do for those 5 weeks. Maybe get my foot in the door somewhere so I have a job right away when I graduate in May, and get my EPA certificate.
I spent the last 15 years either working as an auto tech., or class A CDL driver for moving company's, doing remodeling/used car sales/odd jobs on the side. So the jobs I've held during that time were always just a matter on making a phone call. I did mess up 3 years ago and temporarily (but still) had my license revoked so that was also a big factor in my career change. I could go back to my old job, take a pay cut, and just be a mover/truck maintenence. But I did make a vow to my back that I would stop moving furniture by age 35...
So what I'm getting at is; do HVAC Co's ever hire helpers like moving Co. do when they need them? Should I just go to some of the local HVAC co's and ask? Do they ever just hire cash temps, or is that against there insurance policies?
Any advice, leads, ect would be helpful and appreciated. I enjoy working, and can't wait till school is done!
