Kool... I really like Hoshi and their products. The National Service Director and I go way back. He understood why I made the decision to stop doing warranty work. He also let me know that the sales department runs the show, not service. I can give you a straight answer, but not here, e-mail or phone me. Got to hit the gas pedal... uhhhh, brake pedal I mean!

Last year I did Hoshi was 5K loss in travel and labor. I miss that traffic in atlanta, love those 8 lane hiways, and if your not driving 80 your backing up... are these jobs with Hoshi any good, like the one in peachtree city? http://jobs.rses.org/c/search_results.cfm?site_id=156
That's about the size of it. As I was saying "Atlanta" traffic is really bad here and DOT says it will double by 2008 without additional road funds or new projects. Warranty that will not pay same amount as customer... who would you go to? Last year I did Hoshi was 5K loss in travel and labor. I like the schools too and go every chance I get but even schools have become a happy hunting ground for sales reps to bug the crap out of you. I don't live on sales, just service I tell them. Oh well.... One day they will learn there will be no sales without good techs. If they want warranty help, pay the rate.
HCSR,....Oh.....never mind. Service representative....? Yeah, I'm authorized to do Hoshi warranty service. Manitowoc and Scotsman too. Manitowoc has gotten real snooty about it lately, though. This new S-Series deal came up and they said this year's service school was mandatory. I said mandatory as to what?....and they say it's required to maintain my status as an authorized servicer of their stuff. I said I'll go but let them know I didn't like the way this whole erosion of the traditional dealer thing has gone. Well, to answer your question I decided a while back that this warranty service wasn't making me any money so I informed my distributors and all my local serviceless pot & pan dealers not to call me any more. I have ceased doing any warranty service on equipment that I didn't sell. I have no obligation to cater to their customers or their responsibilities to them.
Hoshizaki Service Care Representative That is the name they gave us about 12 years ago. Being in Atlanta and the Hoshi plant in Peachtree City we have good relations but the old state sales rep could stand improvement. I gave up my HSCR standing because of the lost travel and labor we suffer with their warranty issues. Actually I gave up doing warranty for almost everyone about 3 years ago. Just wondering if you have simular issues.

Ice Are you a HCSR?
You'll learn soon enough that an ice machine.....any ice machine, is a mechanical monster that is a high maintenance beast that you have to continually throw money, time and effort at to keep it running. The Ice-O-Matic, while it's not at the bottom of my list (That would be Cornelius ), is a decent machine if you understand it's needs and until it starts to self-destruct. I have to admit that the folks at Ice-O-Matic had the Kahunas to add that quirky little harvest-assist motor setup to address the typical harvesting ice-drop problems experienced by all of the vertical waffle-type evaporator machines ever made. I've seen some I-O-M machines where (if the tubes haven't separated yet) they could still drop every time even though there was absolutely no nickel left on the evaporator surface......solely due to that harvest assist. We have to give credit where it is due. Now, Manitowoc has introduced their new S-Series machines. Some have a form of harvest assist via a little air pump.....some of them don't. I think they already know that there's a problem but are hedging a bit. Shame on them. In my book, Manitowoc is moving down my list of favorites, Scotsman is moving up and Hoshizaki is still the frontrunner by a mile.
Ice O Matic If you can keep an Ice-O-Matic running, you will learn a lot about how all those little things work or don't. Then when you get into a real ice machine (most anything else except maybe Kold Draft) you will appreciate the better design and/or parts. Fred

Profish There are many ice machine manufacturers out there that make quality machines. They also have their money where their integrity is and have their engineers design the machines with quality and foresight for longevity. The materials involved such as the evaporator being 100% stainless or copper with cheap zinc coating, the solid state boards, refrigeration valves and power controls made by reliable processes have to do with how many service calls you will have during the life time of the machine as long as it is not neglected or basically just kept clean. There are so many differences between companies we could just go on forever and have a great debate about it. If you have worked on all types of brands you will have your favorite(s). It is not that we hate any one brand. We, as techs, understand quality of materials and design when we see it. Another factor is, those of us who know, hate ice-o-matic. Who was it that said.... "Anything that is free is not worth having"? At least your price was right! [Edited by lusker on 07-21-2004 at 03:08 PM]
that was it Thanks for all your replies it was the two wires I posted before its working now,R12 rules I like this one its free, What would make the difference? Ill bet they all have compressor of the same, waterpump of the same. solid state timers, coils and relays. The same concept of harvest and Icemaking, bin storage. Please tell me whats the difference? that was it
As Icemeister said, the suction pressure will rise if the valve's opening. Frozensolid's right too about the cond. fan motor (if it's air cooled). Another sign that the valve's not opening is that the sheet of ice will start cracking up if the hg valve doesn't open and there's no water going across the evap because it will drop in temp.
I'm not familiar with that machine but I'll chuck in my two cents anyway. A temp probe on both sides of the valve will also tell you if its working properly. Check to see if your cond fan cycles off in harvest, if it does not you may not have enough hot gas for harvest.
If the HG valve is not opening (for whatever reason) the system will appear to be still in the freeze cycle. i.e. the suction and discharge pressure won't change. If you're getting hot gas to the evap the suction pressure should jump up to about 80-100# (R502/R404A).
Your problem is the brand itself. If your serious about ice, get an ice machine. Like a Hoshi, Manitowoc, Scotsman.
that works I hooked 110v to the coil and hear a click on the valve. I checked the relay that feeds this coil and found 2 broken wires I think may have gone to the high temp device that is no longer there so it would not have a neutral to the relat, connected them together and well see Ill let you kno [Edited by profish00 on 07-20-2004 at 11:48 AM]
that works
I just aquired a machine it will make ice the 2 timers work as stated in the manual and the coil energizes on the hot gas valve There seems to be plenty of pressure on that side of the machine. exactly how do I check to see if the valve is working. also the harvest motor does enter the cycle and has plenty of pressure on the sheet of ice but of cource it just spinns on the clutch. so I think I have narrowed it down to the hot gas valve. any help?
