If you and no one at your company has centrifugal experience I would walk away from this one. This isn't going to be simple...or pretty. I think it'll go way beyond simple air leaks. If you want to PM me I might be able to help you find someone who could take it on.

Machine was not run for more than 8 hours in the 3 years, still hooked up to water piping, 10 years history of air problems, wont tell us what York/JcI wants to do other than that is has a leak and they want too much money. So I guess they want to start with a leak check using the hot water heater in the boiler room. No one at my company including myself in a centrifugal tech. I worked at Trane years ago and assisted with some repairs.

Any low pressure machine that sits without running for any length of time is going to be full of air. You can't leave a machine sitting for months at a time and then expect them to run properly when you push the start button.

You didn't answer the rest of my questions so I don't know how to help you.

What do you mean "was never turned on"? York did the starup and then it just sat for three years? If that's the case that machine may have some serious problems. You just can't do that to a chiller.

Here's how I explained it to a customer who thought you could do as you describe. I asked him if he bought a brand new Mercedes would he drive it home from the dealership and park it in the garage and do nothing at all to it and then a year and a half later just go out, start it up and drive away? He said "No." I told him the chiller cost about the same as a brand new Mercedes and he had done basically the same thing to it.

BTW, did the customer tell you what York/JCI wanted to do to the machine?

machine had refrigerant in it. Was never turned on. Was just told the maintenance dept started it up and after a day it had a pure warning. The machine only runs as a back up. I think this machine will always have a air problem if it just sits.

Has this machine been sitting for three years with refrigerant in it? How about the oil? Has the motor been turned at least monthly during this period? Was it piped up during this time? Water in the condenser and evaporator tubes? There are very specific York instructions for "laying" a machine up. If they weren't followed you may have a nightmare on your hands.

customer wants to start up a york yt chiller that has been sitting idle for 3 years. The history I was told is that the chiller was 200lbs low on refrigerant, in need of leak repairs, when it ran rust could be seen floating in sight glass,oil in rupture disc cup and shaft seal. York has looked at the machine, customer wants second look. There is a hot water heater in room was going to warm up chiller and leak test. As far as the rust I don think just oil changes will solve it. The last leak repair done years ago by another contractor showed the chiller 200lbs low. Is this machine going to be a nightmare that wont go away??????Also last time it was run some years ago went off on purge.
