An 18x36x5 is not a standard size. Here is a website who sells case quantities of Practical Pleat filters. Maybe they can get some made for you that size. http://stores.filtersdirect2you.com/...Categories.bok

Brings up an interesting dilemma, Homeowner comes on here seeking to improve his knowledge level and get the most bang for his buck; but his "professional" contractor does not have the knowledge or desire to assist his customer. So Homeowner has to seek out another contractor for filters. This forum preaches and rams it to the homeowner seeking to get a properly functioning system; but still tolerates the uninformed contractors just because they have a refrigeration recovery certificate. Of course Twilly will pop in here with some wise crack to belittle the sources of his income.
About the same as a case (12) 17 1/2 x 35 1/2 x 1 MERV8 filters...

The filters that slide into a filter grille need room behind it (in the stack head) to handle the overall depth. The Practical Pleat by Filtration Manufacturing has a gasket around it to reduce the air by-pass a high efficient filter normally generates.
..
There are 2" and I believe 4" or 5" return air grille filters available from Filtration Mfg and Quality Air Filters. http://www.qualityfilters.com/products_grillefilter.php
There is no room to fit any size filter before the return on the air handler since the duct had to be shortened so much to fit the much longer AH. It appears I'm stuck with a grill filter. Is there any way to modify my large (18 x 36) single grille to accept a 4" standard size filter?
Nobody can answer your question. The static pressure in your system needs to be measured with the filter in place. Alternatively, a sensible approach is to calculate air velocity at your filter in feet per minute (fpm = cfm/surface area). If it's about 300 fpm, it's reasonable to assume (note I said ASSUME) that various Filtrete filters will work fine. Do use a GeneralAire G99 Air Filter Gage and monitor. If it's 500 fpm or higher you're SOL. I'd investigate fitting a standard 4.0" filter frame (not the silly residential odd filter sizes > 4" designed to mess you up and chain you to a brand). The Aprilaire is wider than that. If there's no space for a 4.0" frame, go for a 2" filter frame.
Need advice on filter at return grill in "allergy home" Just installed a new Bryant Evolution system but there wasn't enough space to fit the air purifier(Aprilaire 5000). I am now left with a return grill about 3 feet away from the air handler that can handle a 1" filter (18x36). What would be the best filter to fit this grill that won't give an excessive pressure drop in a home with severe allergy sufferers. My wife won't permit a free standing filter because of appearance. I change the filter about every 3 months. Thanks.
