just wrap them in tin foil, unit was running though, when i pulled them out they were so hot i couldn't touch them, how it didn't start a fire is beyond me

At least that's what a bunch of folks prior to me looking at a piece of equipment seems to think

Probably the best way to do it using approved tools

Additionally if in a plant use the necessary PPE for the job

I always use channel locks, just turn off the disconnect and grab em from the load side not the line side. The amperes is always stamped into the copper at the end of the fuse don't worry about fudging up the label and if you need to know what size fuse to put in a disconnect, then we need to start a new thread.
