Listen to Frank Zappa play a solo, he had a rule that you should never repeat a riff or hold a single note longer than three beats. His mind was always moving his fingers to a different variation riff after riff. ie: "Willie the Pimp".

Terry Kath with Chicago was another one.[/QUOTE]

Terry Kath was one of the best guitarists ever! Listen to the "Live at the Carnagie Hall" release & you'll hear some of the best guitar work ever!
His death was a tragic loss.

Guitarists like Satch and Malmstien are somewhat impressive in a show-offy and pretentious way. If they only made music.

As a longtime guitarist, there's only one thing that really floats my boat with the ones I listen to, and it's that sound that sends a shiver up your spine and gives you goosebumps when you hear it. I don't care what kind of crazy makeup or outfits they have on, and while lightning fast playing speed is somewhat impressive, it just ain't that big of a deal.

Clapton's a perfect example of an old school guitarist who has the speed but doesn't *need* it to impress you.
