Yeah! learnt this after working on unit customer had tried to fix themselves, ran it up to see what it was doing (they reported it tripping overloads), thing ran ok then sounded like it was siezing up as the comp laboured and cap over heated, then all this smoke came out the electrics box, found a tiny start cap where two run caps should have been.

Customer claimed no one had worked on it since last time we were there

Generally speaking start caps are usually black plastic and run caps are metal or gray plastic. The only way to know for sure is by looking at the capacitors value and knowing where it belongs in the circuit
