exactly and even if you ARE experienced you cant ( or I seriously don`t recommend it) juggle around say commercial refrig , chillers industrial refrig , you most certainly can , but a high chance of brain fry and possibility of messes in my opinion. It is nice to see different stuff from time to time, but Im a believer in staying focused on your specific area or discipline maybe not for life but whilst in your current position, and maybe learning slowly diff area , eg Im more into automation and controls , cheers
As a commercial guy; I turn down work that our salesman tries to have us do such as chillers or controls. I told our salesman: "If you want this type of work, you need to hire people trained in it or buy a company that does it. This business is too complex to think you can do everything. It's not that people are not smart enough; it's about training and experience. You must have respect for the trade." I enjoy learning about all aspects of this business; but I try not to be a fool.
That is one of the reasons I left " The Big C " and went to the " SunFlake " . The safety program made it unable to compete . It is like they wanted to get out of the service / repair of machines. It was to the point more and more was being subbed out to contractors.

We have F-gas regulations over here that are getting rid of the cowboys. You need to go to College for 4 years then get your F-gas certificate (you can get it with grandfather rights) The customers are demanding this when you turn up on site as it is a legal requirement. Also with environmental concerns the up and coming engineers are getting better and better So it is goodbye to the cowboys (I don't know how that translates- British for bad tradesmen)
Kinda funny , I think some factory guy's only know what there supervisors and co workers can pass along to them.I f you change the paint color of the machine in front of them there clueless.
I stopped a bank robbery today, knocked them both out with my micron gauge.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with it that an oil change, an annual and some purge run time couldn't fix. Are you saying that it sat idle for 12 years after it was mis-diagnosed? I once came across a bench grinder (about 1500 tons) that the customer said hadn't ran in several years. Did what you did, plus repaired or rebuilt the entire belt driven purge. I don't know if another company had been involved in it, or if they had simply let it sit idle on their own. Those types calls were always my favorites.
I seen a company condem a small York because of shaft seal leaking. Building owner didn't know any better to call in another contractor for a second opinion and ended up replacing the York with a multi stack.
I love it to embarrass them in front of bldg. owners and facility operators ALL the time . Those types COST the customer more money with their lack of knowledge . My personal favorite was when a contractor condemned a motor on a CVHE and it was a faulty disconnect on the unit mounted starter . It would have been VERY labor intensive to change motor due to area in bldg the chiller was located. We were called in to submit a bid to change motor . We were expected to be the " HIGH " bid . ( I was with Baltimore Trane ) . A rental chiller was priced to them etc etc etc . I had it making chilled water within 30 hrs of service call being placed . It was the only chiller to serve the bldg. Helped the sales team obtain a new service contract customer .
