If it were just shoddy work, it would be bad enough. Some of those pose a genuine hazard to the customers' safety. I would get out as fast as I can for my own interest. When something goes horribly wrong, you won't want your name mixed up with this bunch. The longer you stay, the more likely you are to be accused of negligence even after you're gone. As for taking customers with you, I wouldn't do it while still on his payroll, but if you pass some cards around after you move on, all's fair in an open marketplace.

After looking at the pictures, I felt a little better about the "tech's" I had working under me before I left to start my own business.

I see these pics and think of the lack of common sense. These techs need to know that liquid cannot be compressed. Do work pay attention to your meters, check your indoor coils for restrictions clean them etc...

I would agree with this statement 100%. It really starts to wear on you when you're the designated clean up guy. What irritates me the most is they make the same money as I do, so what's their motivation for getting any better?

I see nothing but dollar signs in all of those photos. It truly is a shame that alot of other techs don't and your stuck fixing it after it could have been a billable repair.

I worked a new construction gig for awhile and all I did was go around and fix all the mistakes the sub contractors made. I hated going to work. So I feel your pain. You just got to fight thru it until something better comes along.

    Good luck op

any signs of nepotism at a company and i want out! i've seen it WAAAYYYyyyy to many times in my career and am smarter with age. 97% of the time its bad news. i've actually asked owners/managers if family members work at the company during job interviews and if they do whats their position at the company. luckily i work at a family/friend free company now

The company I work for the father passed down to son, he had 3 brothers work for him, they made him money while he was skiing and boozing. When he sobered up he decided to try and run the company, well he pissed his brothers off and bankrupt the company. It went from 60 employees down to now 2 in the field and 3 in the office (which makes no sense).

I just put a dual mini split in two weeks ago, I don't know how they got it to clip on bottom with the lines hanging out lol, mine looked a little different in the end too lol.
Keep your head up and look toward the future. I hate were I work but with every other company having guys laid off in screwed too.

Sounds like your father was a good man.

All of these pictures are from our jobs and everyone of these is good customer who pays on time.

We installed the indoor unit and "charged" the unit. It was lbs over charged with 30*subcool, no superheat and this was how the disconnect was left.

This is the boss's son who installed this one, no disconnect, hadn't rubbed through the coating yet

4 month old motor, set screw never installed.

Commercial account that had maybe 75 units and all the blower wheels looked like this, 1in3 were overcharged and running no superheat
    Attachment 272321
This customer paid for a gas valve, inducer motor and box the inducer mounts on because of rust and failure... No one checked the heat exchanger

If I took a picture of every occurrence I would have easily a couple hundred by now, just of my company. I let my boss know each time without being rude or accusatory and he just doesn't seem to care. I hope to open my own business in the next few years because I get tired of seeing hard working people who don't know any better get hack work that they pay a premium for, in some cases like the wire run straight into the unit the customer will actually get charged for a disconnect and liquid tight because my boss will say that it was put in the same way as the old one or that those codes didn't exist when the unit was installed... In 2009! I keep my head down and try to do good work on my jobs but it was finally too much so I turned here to get it off my chest.
I feel ya! I work for a company that has been in business for forty-five years and right now they have the worse techs. The only reason I stay is the bonuses are awesome, but there are call backs with the angry customers that do pinch a nerve.

My boss got started snagging a couple of customers from his employer. Commercial accounts.

14 years later and much richer he's never regretted it.

Yes ma'am, I'm not saying that anything will go wrong, but when things go caboom, you know who to call to clean up the mess (assuming you're still alive and capable of using your telephone)

Speaking of, here's a mini split I had to finish at the end of the day.

This is how the evaporator was mounted when I got there.
Yes, I especially enjoy the "everything done's all you have to do is...", lol.
