    I really dont know how they hire the tech side.There is some web based job offerings online I think.

    Don't forget alot of larger more established companies use head hunters and that may be the case with JCI. I don't specificly know that but that may be a reason you don't see ads. You know the head hunter ads I'm talking about " We are looking for and expierenced HVAC mechanics. We have been hired buy an established contractor to recruit mechanics with such and such qualifications send resume to: Acme Head Hunting

    I was reading this thread and saw you're in St. Louis.
    I've mailed and faxed resumes directly to Johnson Controls
    along with applying on their web site and through another
    job board with no luck. Do they take applications
    from walk ins? I've found some places don't like that.
    My background is electronics and I just completed my
    program in HVACR to round out my knowledge.
    I want to go the controls route with JC, Seimens, etc.
    I've wired up a couple of Metasys systems and liked them.

    I started at jci as a chiller mechanic a little over a year ago.I really think it depends on the type of person you are with them.They have alot beauro/corporate b.s. to deal with.At times you will feel self employed due to the amount of responsibilties that are placed on you.If one is a self starter it might be a good match.I previously worked for a manufacture and find pros and cons to both sides.JCI you have intense paperwork,interaction with bean counter type of people,they can be pretty tight with the money as far as tooling....There is pretty good freedom which can be nice on a positive note.Im not looking directly to bail out at this time...but if something came along that looked nice considerations would be made.

    I heard from a PC tech that work for them that they laid off alot of people nationally from there 'solution' division, due to trying to be more competive with other companys, some of there people had to take wage reduction also. Go figure!

    I just talk with a guy who got 'let go' 2 weeks before x-mas. He was with them for 10 yrs. He was a BAS tech. They replace him with 2 new guys. He told me that 2 other service techs were let go to, here in the midwest!

    I am in the same shoe as rico53212. just got hiring by JCI and doing some research on the company. 01/03/2005 will be the first day on training. can anyone please give me more info about this company before i put in my two weeks for my current job.

    I worked for JCI, they SAID they had work for me, and that I would be a permenate employee.
    well after putting in 4 months of asking for tools and a real van " I had a mini van " and the uncertany of getting laid off. I quit,
    Well that was a huge mistake. I got a phone call from the dealership telling me to pick up my NEW truck just days after walking out the door.
    9 months later the co. that I went to work for Pink slipped me they only need me for A/C. then I was outa work for 6 months, It's been almost 1 year now and I still havent cought up on bills.
    If you work there, just be patient, someday you will get what u want from the Co.

    Reality

    The company in our discussion is very big with alot of bureaucracy and layers. That approach will not work. If I'm not soliciting for a job, then why am I calling? Bureaucratic companies go by the book. They can also afford to advertise to get the best response. Why would they hide an open position they need?

    Make the company want to hire you.

    Don't walk in and say, "You guys hiring?” Walk in and say that you would like some info on their company (what they do, type of markets, etc) Learn about the company, study it.

    If you decide that you want to work there, call and ask to talk with (depending on size of company) the service manager, owner, etc. Tell him/her that you are interested in their company, and would it be possible to stop in sometime to discuss in more detail what they do. Maybe at lunch? Tell them you are not looking for an interview, you just want to learn more about their company. Ask them if you could shadow a tech for a day to learn more.

    Tell them you have heard great things about their company, and hope that when you have the proper experience, and they are hiring you hope to work for them someday.

    See what happens.

    That is a nice theory, but I have tried that in other companies and the HR responds by saying, "I'm sorry, we do not have any technican positions at this time. When I ask, "What other positions are available?", I get, "We have technical problem solver positions available but YOU said you were looking for a technician position."
    The HR person turns it around to discourage my "Initiative".
    Companies need to advertise specific needs if they are serious about filling them. Budgets are not designed for a "Walk-in" employee. KEYSPAN discourages walk-ins, too. They are only smart enough to follow corporate procedure. Many HR people (and especially receptionists) are incapable of seeing talent.

    Some companies don't advertise because they would rather hire someone who takes the initiative and the want, to work for them by showing interest in their company and walking through the door.

    They Might Be Good In Other Parts Of The Country, But Stay Away From Them In SW Florida.
    Tampa On Down, They Go Threw A lot Of People.
    2 Can To Our Company In The Last 60 Days.
    They Have Some Chic Running The Service Dept, An Was Told That She Is Not Very Good At The Hvac End of It, A Bean Counter Type.
    You Are A Number And A Profit & Lost Statement,And Likes To Rage You From 7 Am To 11 Pm And Longer!
    Just My .2$ Worth, Take It For What It Is.
