SYO424a 110830566 Another one for ya that I have a question on. Picked up a txv and filter drier for said machine above. Dropped it off to another tech onsite. I opened the box and saw peeped the instructions while he proceeded to do what he does. He removed the old txv and proceeded to braze in the new txv (it was gooped in Hot Damn) while purgin nitro. I saw on the instructions that it said if it was for a Q model that a J tube would need to be installed. From the factory this was mounted upside down. We both peered over the instructions and came to the conclusion that since it wasn't a Q model that it should be installed the same way it came out. He did his thing and it didn't take long at all. I left for another job. He calls and says it is showing the same symptoms. Restriction. He calls mani tech support and they have him braze on service tap on the outlet of the txv and tell him if the pressure reading is the same that it is the txv that it is restricted. I did a quick google search and couldn't find any service bullitans regarding txv mounting on S models. Or should he/we have heeded the instructions and mounted the txv rightside up and sweated in the J tube as it instructed to for for the Q model? Any insight would be appreciated. New valve has been ordered. As for pressure and temps I really can't help ya there. I only know what he told me. After he weighed in charge and compressor start up, high was around 275 ish and dropped down to 150-160ish. Suction dropped the same to settle aorund 2 psi. As for temps can't really help ya there. Wasnt onsite. Told him I peek the internet and see if anybody else has come across this and relay the information to him. thanks again

And that was inlet/outlet on the evaporator?
compresor Just to clarify,,,, the entire top 25 percent of the compressor was sweating instead of freezing the condensate.
compresor
not good. according to pt chart zero. Actually less than zero. two inches from the compressor showed three degrees colder than the outlet of the evap. I did remove the txv bulb and sanded the copper and made sure that the connection was secure in the eleven oclock postion. No change.
What was the superheat when you checked it?
Just an update. Had to go back to the job to get the wire size that is going to the machine and when I get there the customer says, "since you came, the machine has worked perfectly". I find that hard to believe but open the bin and find it full. I explain to the customer that their txv is bad and still flooding the compressor (not as bad as before) instead of frosting the top of the compressor its only making it sweat. While onsite I time the harvest cycle. It droped at 3 minutes 20 seconds. It beat the clock by ten seconds. It's only a matter of time for this unit. I have a funny feeling that they will not want repairs or replacement till the compressor gets taken out. When it does,,, it will be the weekend that I am on call and they will demand that I crap out an evap, txv, and compressor to make the repairs. I can understand why a customer would not want to make that sort of investment on repair. In the same sentence I can hear them bi*ching to me that they had to buy ice over the weekend.
hellow to a fellow az i lived there for 25 years were i worked and still hold license for city of phx iam curently in oh .
You really should try to replace it. I do not believe replacing the valve will solve the flooding. The main problem is that Evaporator. Replacing one part when another is obviously bad is a bad use of customer money. You need to be honest with the customer that spending any money on that machine is the wrong decision. I would not even provide a quote for repair. Hopefully you have a good professional relationship and he will respect your input.
good to hear. hope the customer has the means to make the wise choice & go new Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using Tapatalk
Thanks everyone. Went back this morning and pulled the charge. System calls for 15 lbs. Hit 15 and kept going and going. System was over charged by 6 lbs. Weighed it back in and restarted unit. This time floodback not as bad but compressor still getting liquid back. Told the customer that the txv would need to be replaced and and the evap. He took it quite well and askded for a quote for repair and a quote for new. I hope he makes the right choice. Just wanted to thank everyone. And I did check delta t across the evap.
yanno ... i think myself & OP are wrong on the DLT @ EOF needing to be 150° or greater.. isn't it 160 on Q models? ... for some reason this just popped in my head but i haven't worked on a traditional Q remote in a while ..... so the 143° he's having would be something to check. .... if its constant 143° @ EOF each time you need to get the charge right. if not lean towards expansion valves checkout including checking bulb mount, insulation blah blah .... or junk that p.o.s. machine lol Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using Tapatalk
Could the superheat need to be adjusted? If work was done on the machine in the past, I wouldn't take anything for granted as far as charge, valve settings, superheat, etc. I see a lot of "weigh in the charge" comments, and while that is always the correct thing to do, that doesn't alleviate the need to check other factors.

Evaporator may be very dirty causing floodback and keeping dlt down. But with evaporate on conditon it is no repair will ever make that machine right.
Lol thats funny "is it even legit?" I agree, its probably not! Personally, I think about it like this: low discharge line temp on this type of ice machine is probably one of three things, 1 - low on charge, 2 - compressor issue, or 3. overfeeding txv. Of those 3 choices, which one causes the top of the compressor to freeze up!!!???!!! Heck it might be an overcharge. That's why its a good idea to weigh in the charge first.
if your not equal to or above 150° DLT at the end of freeze cycle your low on charge. . add that to the bad evap you will have release issues due to the obvious. evap at least free of mineral build up? ... id say download the analysis chart but with that evap is it even a legit procedure? 1. If the only problem was harvest valves, you would still have normal discharge line temps. The problem is happening during freeze. 2. He said whole top of compressor is frosted during freeze. I've never seen that on a normally functioning Manitowoc before. Besides my point was not to give the customer a diagnosis, it was to explain to the customer that something EXPENSIVE is broken on his ice machine!

The key to the refrigerant pressures on the Qy machines is at the very end of the harvest cycle if it ever so slightly different from the book there is a problem. From your info about the sheets not falling off as long as the nickel is still on the evaps I would look into the cool vapor solenoid valves not opening all the way. his harvest pressures were on point ... it does seem like a release issue though.
