Awesome topic I am a big railfan. I fixed the underbelly of a nasty turbo icemaker. I cleaned surfaces with a lot of rust with wire wheels, then cleaned and degreased, coated with a rust inhibitor, then painted with cold tar epoxy. I don't know if that is your best route but it worked good for me in a terrible environment. I have also restored a fuel tank on one of my semis. Acid washed it, then poured in some type of fuel tankliner. (a farmer gave it to me had no label) I wish I knew the name of it because when I check the inside of that tank it is still white walled almost eight years later. good luck and keep us posted!

Sika makes a product that produces a porcelain like finish, I've seen it used to coat tower sumps. Don't know the exact name they make a lot of stuff I bet they have something appropriate for your app.

This is what they actually do, the bed liner thing sort of came later as a side deal.


I have seen their products used at a wastewater plant I frequently do work for...

It is a way cool project! But, I hope it doesn't turn into a job. It's all being done by volunteers and through contributions. The R&LHS local chapter was formed in 1991 with the mission of restoring this locomotive to operational condition. The tender is almost complete and we are hoping to use it as a demonstration of capabilities to help raise money to complete the restoration project. Fun fact: The tender was rebuilt exactly as the original with all of the metal parts fasten with hot rivits. We estimate that we used 5,000 rivits and drilled about 14,000 holes during the construction process.

evapco may do it for free for the advertising?

Evapco cooling tower co. and there reps/repair people have a proprietary coating they use that ive seen good results with and it is fireproof.you may want to call the illinois railway museum in union il. they restore alot of trains as well they probably can suggest something.

Locomotive Tender Tank Restoration

Typically, you see me responding to questions about Metasys or system integration topics. I am looking for guidanace on a project where I spend my Saturday mornings volunteering. The Golden Spike Chapter of the Railway and Locomotive Historical Society is restoring a locomotive that was built in 1881. See http://www.trainweb.org/GoldenSpikeL...23project.html for more details. We have completed rebuilding the tender tank and need to find a coating for the interior of the tank that will keep it from rusting from the inside out. When these things were in daily service they would almost always be full of water which minimized this problem. This will be a museum piece that will occasionally be operated on special occations so it is a much bigger concern. I thought with HVAC cooling towers and other storage vessels involved in buildings someone on this forum might be able to point us in the right direction. Thanks for any ideas you can share.
