I use a commercial vac with a microfiber bag. almost HEPA filtration. Never have to worry about stuff escaping.

HeyI do alot of pellet cleanings...very dirty jobs, I use a shop-vac with a high filtration bag http://www.lowes.com/pd_127133-20097...vac&facetInfo= It works very well, lots of suction even when the bad is 3/4 full. it has a very long cord which is handy.

+1 on the drywall bags for the shop vacs !

You can toss the bag when finished ,,,bill for the bag as well or build it in ,,,,,

And your shop vac stays clean as well .

I do not really do that type of work but I have cleaned up some major soot. Here is where I may fall short on helping you... I do not usually work in white carpet areas. We use shop vac brand vacs from lowes. Last big soot job I had I cleaned with a fire hose and shopvac with a wet filter.

Those vacs are tough! You can hose just about every inch of them with a hose. I use them with no filters if I have to for wet of course but I just hose out the impeller.
If you use those with a drywall bag would that help? I'm assuming your not sucking up hot stuff. Just trying to help. Sorry if I'm not much.

We have run into a few minor situations with soot that gets into the home when ding fireplace cleanings. Most of the techs have 1 lowes type shop vac and use this for general service and also for natural gas/propane fireplace maintenance. Several of the guys also have Sid Harvey soot vacs but they are not used on fireplaces as the hoses are usually sooty and dragging these in seems counter productive when trying to keep carpeting and such clean. What do you guys use/suggest for cleaning minor sooted fireplaces and gas logs? What procedures do you have in place to protect the homes/customers and to protect yourself from liability?
