The high price is for more than just the hardware.
A lot of the price for the setup is to cover the back end software, unit/compressor performance database, etc., required for the system to generate accurate efficiency/capacity reports, projected savings for completing recommended repairs/maintenance, and verifying the results.
Someone primarily doing residential and light commercial work wouldn't be able to take advantage of most of those functions. That is why it has always been very high on my "Cool Tool" list, but isn't on my wish list.

While it is very expensive, it is within reason for the market it is targeted for.
10ish years ago, when Honeywell was associated with it, the earlier generation of it cost upwards of $20k for the total equipment, training, and support package.

Soo, have you checked to see if the instrument "rotting on the shelf" it works?

I think you are right about that $20k price tag back when it first rolled out.
One of the cooler aspects of it is that the software, either on the PDA, or on the remote server, had a data base of package unit model numbers, and their compressor model numbers and performance data. Based on the readings taken, the actual capacity and efficiency the compressor was operating at was calculated, which is how it came up with the numbers to determine the potential energy savings of recommended repairs/maintenance.

I don't think they ever made a serious attempt to build a data base for residential equipment. No doubt it is because there is little to no market for a $20k, or even a $4k instrument in the residential world.

Still setting one of these system. Its just rotting on the shelf. Old Honeywell deal with the POS laptop, bags of duct blaster type units, etc. I think new with support back in the day was more closer to $20,000 dollars. Was at an auction for an old HVAC shop in Vegas and picked this up. Looks cool, but just came along with what I really wanted...$50,000 worth of shop stock and tools.

    It does look funky.

There have been several configurations of it over the years, at least 2 while Honeywell was associated with it.

If I remember correctly, at one point is was well over $10,000, possibly over $15k, for the equipment, training, and support, and you didn't even own the tool.
