It is an old lennox helical heat exchanger, I see quite a few of those in my area. most(if not all) are in that condition.
why can't you "patch it up" always feel bad when i have to shut one down at night
It looks like a HX from a Lennox packaged unit. If so the HX does not run under positive pressure.
