That may be extreme, but sounds like a plan to me. I could not believe anyone smart enough to operate a screwdriver, a volt meter and ESPECIALLY a conduit bender would do such a thing!
That could be the coolest thing I've ever seen. I can't wait to run across something like that. I'd find out who did it and invite him back out to the job site and invite other contractors to point and laugh at him, then take turns kicking him in the nads while his family watches.
Thanks jerrycoolsaz They look like a VERY large company. While they probably lack the B.S. that I experience with my company I was hoping to find a descent and somewhat smaller company out on the west side maybe doing some resteraunt low/med temp. That is what I used to do before. In the small town we never really worked on the supermarket stuff, allthough it's similar. I checked the website for your company. They have an opening listed. Said they wanted 2 yrs min experience, a valid epa cert, and completion of an acredited HVAC/R training. Well, if they mean like RSI, I never did go to such a school. I have been doing referidgeration for approx 7 yrs all together and continuous training like Heat Pump Council, Manitowoc ice machines, etc etc. Just not an official school. Which, honestly, the guys we hire straight from school don't know their own ass's at times! Thanks for the info! I'll keep checking into it. I'm not sure what I want to do, but I think I may be wanting to get out of this 100% wam-bam thank you mam residential stuff.

Hey PAYSONHVAC I work for http://sourcerefrigeration.com/. The others in our field are: Pro-Tec Refrigeration ( family owned ) Diehl Refrigeration ( Carrier owned ) Hussman Searls ( independent ) Basha's ( in house ) That's it for markets. Smaller outfits that do restaurants that I've heard good things are: Dial One Mears Andrew's ICI ( heard their senior techs left last year though ) Northern AZ refrigeration

Originally posted by haji7 I worked on a house in Northwest Washington D.C.. They had installed a wine cooler a Year before. Found A/C completely flat. So I get my good G.E leak dectector out and plug it in to a receptacle outside it starts smoking. That plug was wired for 230 volts. Regular receptacle man I was pist 300.00 leak detector fried. Was able to charge the H/O for it threw some creative bill work. Happened to me with my vac pump once, but I knew it in a fraction of a second by the sound of the pump and jerked the plug real quick before it fried anything. Smoke is said to be the number one cause of test equipment failures, cause you always see it right before equipment quits working

Oh yeah, jerrycoolsaz, you are here in Arizona? I'm thinking of going back to doing some low temp/med temp. I rarely do any of it here in the valley but I used to do a pretty good variety of walk ins, ice machines, and various kitchen stuff like the dish washers and Fry Master equip a few years back. We pretty much worked on everything there but didn't specialize in one type. I was pretty good at it and got to be the main tech in this particular town to do most of the bussiness's. I just moved to the big city a few years back for family reasons. It's been a few years since I did the low temp/med temp stuff on a daily basis but I'd catch up real quick. I'm fairly good with all mechanical aspects and electronics so I learn new stuff easier than about any tech I know. Maybe you have some knowledge of some of these companies and who is ok to work for? I live in the west side, would like to work the west side if posible.
Well, now that you mention it, there IS NO flue. However, the furnace was disabled. They are ONLY using it for COOLING. This is the only time I have been there. Funny thing, the electrician had added a bunch of extra outlets for an overkill of space heaters lined up all around the call center. This is Phoenix. They could use 1/3 of the heaters. Anyway, the girls there mentioned that when the dopey electrician added those outlets for the space heaters he killed all the power to their many computers without warning which really messed stuff up for them. I told them I could have wired in all of those new outlets (which were in exposed conduit on the interior walls) without disturbing the power to the rest of the building. I have absolutely NO explaination of what the heck this electrician was thinking on this job!
Holy crap!! Where's the flue? Is the flue opening just wide open for rain to come in? [Edited by midhvac on 03-09-2004 at 01:39 PM]
Wall of shame picture Thats sad! I have seen some about as bad. Is this type thing getting better or worse? I got a feeling its getting worse! It just continues to lower the image of the HVAC industry to consumers!
Wall of shame picture
I something like ths once, where the guy ran an outlet outside next to his unit.. Anyway. is that a furnace outside?? Shouldn't it be inside where it's kept dry from the rain??
Nice. By other threads, I guess you're with CR? We do maerkets and convenience stores and see some interesting stuff like that. Somebody tapped into our 480vac, 3 phase panel to power an extension cord. The call was that everything they plugged into this cord burnt. "277 vac to ground, ya think"
There must be some DUMB electricians to do what this guy did on this job. Today I got a no cool call on a bussiness. Yes, no cools have started in Phoenix allready! So I go there and check it out. First of all the unit was quite the site! The unit was just sitting outside on a boxed return as if in a closet, but NOT in a closet. The ductwork went off of it and thru the wall. You know it's a cheap job when a GOODMAN is there! So. I turn the t-stat on and the condenser doesn't run. No big deal as I remove the cover to the condenser. No power. I check the breaker, it's not tripped. SO I look in the disconnect. No power on EITHER leg. Hmm..... So I take apart the disconnect and what do I see? The wires coming in from the main breaker panel were disconnected from the "line" terminals of the disconnect and wire nutted to some other wires then ran out of the disconnect to the new conduit shown to the left of the disconnect. I'm thinking "why? what the heck???" So I follow the new looking conduit around the building. It goes through the wall. I go inside the bathroom to find... This. A new intant hot water heater under a sink. SO I go back outside. Look in the breaker panel to see... This. The electrician removed one of the wires from the 2 pole breaker and connected it to nuetral. This was to supply 120V to his newly installed water heater. He used the existing A/C breaker!!! That dumb a$$ actually had the NERVE to run his NEW wires in conduit far enough to the condenser's disconnect box, use it for his j-box and remove the power from the condenser for his water heater!!! The owner of the bussiness was pist. I could hardly keep from laughing. Actually, I DID laugh at it. I could not understand a electrician doing this. So I recommended that since I was there for me to switch the wires real quick so i can make SURE the A/C works. They agreed and I switched it back to this... and switched the wires back in the disconnect to the proper terminals leaving the electricians wires capped off. I told the owners the electrician better run a dedicated line for his water heater and not pull that crap again! They must give anybody a license to be an electrician??? All in all at least it was a easy job for me and I got some photos out of it :-)
