Hmmm, Lessee... Before HVAC: 12, then self employed. Then 2 tries in sales, each time back to self employed. Then received HVAC license (self employed); coming up on 10 years (June 2012) of resi HVAC... and age of 60 this fall. There were some interesting things along the way: Drove a concrete truck, worked on both school busses and 18 wheeler tractors (diesel), aircraft mechanic, and of course a couple of stints in sales. The varied experiences taught me as much as any one occupation did. Oh yeah... part time baggage handler with Pan-Am Airways... with travel privileges. Went to over 25 countries pass-riding in the late 1970's... worth every second of the adventures!
Been through 4 company's in 8 years in the trade but about to go to 5th company shortly. First two would promise apprenticeships but would not deliver. Then finished apprenticeship at 3rd so moved on to 4th for another apprenticeship and now moving to 5th because they offer more money. Always left on extremely good terms would be welcome back at any of them.
22 years at the first one. Then I don't know. Mid life crisis or something. Decided to move on and see what it's like to start a new job. It last 18 months thank God. Now at 3rd company for 18 months. So far so good.

thats normal! most crooked contractors screw you and forget to pay you and dont pay time and a half. force you to sell old ladies stuff they do not need etcccccccccccccc! I would say the average guy would go through a dozen crooked contractors to find one good one? That would be pretty good actually! How many companies 7 years in trade and 8 companies and 1 wholesaler. I don't like the switching so much, but I think my next move will be to work for myself. I still get calls from recruiters, but the pay keeps going down on these offers. I am at a very small and laid back company right now and enjoying it very much.

9 hvac/r places not including the navy since I was 18. Now 43 and been self employed for 14 yrs.
11 in 4 states. Never left on bad terms and never looked back. Longest stints where 10 years at 1 and 16 at another. I wish I could find the old Far side cartoon, 2 goldfish in a bowl saying "he went over the wall 3 weeks ago he must have made it".
15 years 6 companys. should have stayed with the 4th one(did the same 20 building and it was getting old) the one im at is a keeper getting 40+ and every one around is slow. did I say I love my job....

five years with a special projects outfit doing chiller/boiler/tower quick turn replacements and service. Eleven years with a national control contractor doing service and project management on high value assets, two years with a commissioning company, and finally on my own since 2004. and oh, the pension thing I got more than that in the lowest fund out of my three.
13 years, 1 at the first shop and 12 with this one. I'll stay here as long as I can. Why leave here and do the same job somewhere else?
2 Companies 26+ years. Both great non union shops, treat guys right. I may retire here if I live long enough.
