I don't know about that. I remember walking to a polling place with my dad to watch him vote for Eisenhower, and I think they are just right.

Still trying to kill your own thread eh? LOL Give up, when a thread takes on a life of its own best just to leave it alone until it dies!

Maybe you should post a couple pics of your tattoos so we can debate if they are offensive or not?

    I would hire you

provided that you were willing to cover them. My best tech has 1 visible tat. He keeps it covered to comply with my policy of NO VISIBLE TATOOs.

I have to agree that most that ave tatoos are good, hardworking guys, But in my part of the country (and I think that plays a big part) tatoos are looked down on as unproffessional.

Tel you interviewer upfront you have them and that you are willing to cover them if necessary and they shouldn't be an issue.

Best of luck. This is a great career

I'll tell ya a story. Years ago, I was called out to a factory, industrial job. Maint boss has swastikas, "hitler", the German SS logos, "white power" tats up and down his arms, on his chest, up to his neck.

He had a huge poster on the maint shop wall...Hitler with his arm raised.
On the bottom, it said "next time, no more Mister Nice Guy".

years later, I get a call to another industrial shop, I wonder how they got my name. August, 110 degrees out.

I find the Maint boss, tells me problems, tells me where equip is. "Oh by the way, "xxxx" is the one who gave me your number, he'll be right along". xxxx is the maint boss that had the Hitler poster. Along he comes, with a long sleeve shirt, collar buttoned up tight to his neck.

Did I say it was 110 degrees out that day?

OK so none of what you mentioned above has to do with tattoos.....so you are saying only superficial snobby people judge you on your tattoos?
I'm confused. I thought he said MOST people form their opinion of you in the first 30 seconds, not just "snobby people."

Like I said, I know a lot of great people who have tattoos. The unfortunate part is the number of people who display them who are NOT "great people." That ruins it for the good, hardworking people who have them. It is for that reason that someone who strives to be viewed as a professional may want to avoid having them.

Whoever said that tattoos are associated with drugs, jail and alchoholism is completly ignorant. That is like saying every white man who shaves his head is associated with the skinheads and the neo-nazi movement.........they are both complete generalizations and ignorant statements
Really , thats funny junior , i didnt get a single tat untill i QUIT drinking. And no one can see them when i have a short sleeve shirt on.
Being a profesional means showing the general public what their ideal service technician should look like. Weather you agree with their idea or not , they are the ones [ hopefully ] paying to recieve a service in what is becoming a highly competitive market.\
Changes in everyones life affect each of us diferently , maybe a tat was your way of expressing who you were or what you were going through at the time. Is that who you are now? Or does the pookieman ink still rock like it used too?

Check out Twillis posts he always puts a happy spin on things , i just really ,really hope thats not his real picture.

February of 07' I interviewed a man looking to fill a service tech position
that we had open. Really nice guy with a background in commercial hvac
that had relocated to Arkansas from Arizona so that he and his wife and
kids could be closer to her family. After a 30 minute visit in my office we
strolled out back to look at the shop and to just shoot the breeze for an
hour or so (I find this the best way to get past a formal setting and get
to know someone with their gaurd down) and ended up hiring him. A few
months go by and summer heat hits and he's wearing his long sleeved
shirts buttoned up to the collar. I told him he's going to have a heat
stroke like that and he should wear short sleeves and cargo shorts like
everyone else. He told me that back in Arizona it's hot and the heat
here is nothing. I said okay but be sure to drink plenty of water anyway.

At the end of summer the Hell Angels had a reunion of sorts in a town
north of us ( Eureka Springs) and a bunch of us rode our bikes up to take
a look. Back at the shop on Monday we were all talking about it and our
new hire started sharing some stories with us about his experiences with
the Hells Angels and other clubs. WOW!!!

The next day he comes in with some pictures. His hair was really long
and he has tattoos from his ankles to his neck and down to his wrists.
He told us about being a " hang around" with the Hells Angels and of
being a prospect with the Grim Reapers. His cousin is President of the
Limey Riders and the stories he shared with us just about blew our minds.

Now this guy is soft spoken, kind hearted and in the two years I've
known him he's always worked hard and there is nothing he wouldn't do
for you. Be it at work or to help you out with some project around the house.

He lost two sons, one to sickness and a few months later the other to
an auto accident. That led to the biker lifestyle and don't give a crap
attitude. Five years ago a daughter was born to him and his wife and
that little baby brought everything back into perspective.

Our customers frequently called to say what a nice young man he is
and several wanted only him to do their service work. He is one of the
    best men I know.

Last summer he asked if it would be okay to wear short sleeve shirts.
And I thought, you know attitudes about tattoos have changed a lot in
the last several years so I told him" let's give it a try. As long as no one
complains then I can't see it being a problem."

We've not had one complaint or lost one customer as a result. In fact
many are intrigued and start long conversations as a result.

After having read all of the comments on this thread it started me
thinking... I'm so glad he had them covered up when I first met and
interviewed him because I would have passed on him fearing concern
of how our customers would respond. And in doing so our company
would have missed out on a great service tech and a great individual.

I guess I would say a job seeker should probably cover them up. Once
you have shown your employer that you know what your doing and can
be counted on then you can reveal your tattoos. It proved to me again
that you can't and shouldn't judge a book by its cover.
Thank you so much for sharing, it was an awesome story. I think you have hit the nail on the head with this one, I dont think it is nearly as big of a deal as a lot of people think.

    Absolutely.

When you look back at that unchanging past, and you assess your current "inner man," you find you are motivated to change the "outer man" to reflect the inner. For some, it is as simple as a clean and serviceable uniform. For others, it means changing the haircut you once wore on your '61 FLH (voice of experience there) and for others, it means taking a look at what various markings on you body suggest to OTHERS, and not necessarily what they mean to YOU.

Of course, making changes to your appearance is viewed as being personal in nature. The challenge is to see yourself in the context of your employment environment, and to find the willingness to present yourself in the most favorable manner possible.
