Thank you to all who provided input on this thread. I decided to get the Stinger even though I did like the Appion unit much more in terms of performance. The main reason was the longer over the counter warranty period and the lower cost of repairs. I would use the unit sporadically at best, so the likelihood of identifying a problem and not resolving it in the first ninety days was a concern to me. I do think that if ever I did get a second recovery unit it clearly would be the Appion G5 Twin.
    Thanks again.

I have several of both, the Stinger and the Promax units. I have had both units fail and have found the Stinger to be MUCH cheaper and easier to repair.

Thanks again for all of the input on the recovery units. It seems that all three units are well liked by the technicians answering here. I looked at the Appion G5 today on line and it seems very powerful and fast. I wonder if those who use the G5 really have to cool the recovery tank under normal conditions? At the sale prices it is less than the Promax or the Stinger normally. I'm still not certain but am leaning toward the Appion.

Stinger, but use a filter on the inlet of any unit.

    I Vote for the Stinger

I will vote for the stinger. I have a stinger and the promax. I like the stinger, seems a little faster and is also physically a little smaller which makes it easier to handle and takes less room on the truck.

Every company Ive ever worked for issued the promax rg5410. They seem to be pretty reliable. I would really like to try the yellow jacket xlt or a G5

The Appion G5 Twin is the fastest recovery machine you can buy that doesn't need wheels to move it around, and is very durable. It also happens to be one of the lightest machines.

    Hello to All.
Thank you all for the advice. Is there any PM that these units need to keep them healthy if used only once in a while? I leaning toward the Yellowjacket at this point.
    Thanks again.

Currently using a stinger. It is a hand me down from a tech. The fastest thing I have used yet. Several of our tech's prefer the G5 units even faster.

I've had a bunch of recovery machines. I like the Promax the best even though I had an awful time with it when it was new and under warranty. It had an internal leak I had to send it back 3 times to get the same leak fixed. I even had to talk to them on the phone to explain them where the leak was. You'd think something as simple as that would be a no brainer. Despite that, I still like it a lot.

I had an Inficon before that. It wasn't bad, but the cooling fan blade kept falling off the motor and it drove me crazy. I just couldn't make it stay on.

Either one, if I'm recovering more than 5 lbs, I always use an after cooler between the recovery machine and the tank.

I put the promax on my truck though a beating & it is still going. The guys that had apion or inficon had them rebuilt already & they are years newer.

    Advice on a Recovery Unit

    Hello.
I was wondering if anyone could supply information or an opinion on the Bacharach Stinger 2000 or the PROMAX RG5410 recovery unit. I expect to only use it occasionally, so I'd appreciate any input that you can provide about which unit to get, or would it be better to go with the Appion G5 or the INFICON Vortex. If you have one would you recommend it? They are all in the JS flyer and seem to be priced OK. I will be doing basic residential AC /HP and I'm looking to to move into all climate air source heat pump systems before too long. Any guidance you can provide is appreciated. I haven't done any real refrigeration work since before the Montreal Protocols, so I'd say I'm due for some new tools!
    Thanks.
