Just to let you know (original poster), the defrost time is the harvest cycle on an i/m. I only say this because you said that you haven't worked on many.

If your freeze time is max and you have small ice think water first then refrigeration. If your freeze time is normal or short and small ice think board or float. I suspect you have more then one issue here. The high head could be the cause of small ice, if you have max freeze time, but is only a symptom of the actual problem. That being said if what you posted earlier, clean coil etc, nothing wrong with pulling charge replacing drier and weighing in charge the have a solid base to move forward from.

I think I would have a look at the txv also. Some come adjustable and if someone has already been in the unit they may have played around with the adjustment.

Go to the Scotsman web site and down load the manual for that machine.

    Read before jumping.

correct! a refrigeration issue will not affect cube size, just production speed.

As i mentioned in my previous post, have you checked the board to see if its been replaced with the universal model? I mentioned that the sump should fill once per freeze cycle, what I meant is that it should REFILL once per cycle. The water should fill and a cycle should start. The first time the float triggers, the water should refill. If the board switch is set to the wrong setting, such as a CME 256, the first float signal will trigger a harvest instead of a refill.

How long is the freeze cycle? The float is the only thing that controls cube size. The machine will run until the float says enough water is missing, or until the max freeze timer expires. I think that is one hour. I think normal cycle times for that machine should be about 25 minutes.

No cube holding here. I think I'll pull and reweigh charge in, to get baseline readings. I'm guessing an overcharged system won't have low enough suction that is needed for proper cube making. With 95 ambient would I expect to see pressures reaching 300?

What ive seen happen is if the flaking is bad enough, it will hold on to the cube during harvest and melt it for a bit until it releases a small cube. You have to watch it during harvest.

I have notice that most of our Scotsman's ice machine's have flaking evap plates. I think that I like the Manitowoc setup the best.

Small cubes are almost always due to a water leak causing the float to trigger too early. Check that no water is splashing into the bin during the cycle.

Also if it has a replacement board make sure it is set to the right setting for that machine. The SCE Should add water once during a freeze cycle

I know one machine I hooked up to, had flaky evaps and was not able to keep up with the store taking ice out for use. My owner has decided to just replace the unit with a new one.

To me it sounds like with my experience in working on CME1056 and CME865 that 400psi high side is very high. I had to put my gauges on one 1056 when I was doing PM on it and this high side was about 280 max. I would say pull the charge and vacuum it down and then weight in the correct charge.

Error codes are now gone and sucking in 88F air, filter and condenser clean as a whistle. Still making small cubes. Checked float and appears to be working, hot gas isn't leaking, neither is water valve. High side at times was hitting 400psi and suction pressures higher than specs throughout cycle. Seems as though it's working properly through the cycles. Can't figure this damm thing out. Evap freezes pretty uniformly but has some major flaking. Any suggestion would be greatly. I haven't worked on many ice machines. Thanks
