hey dave who do you work for. maybe i know you? Right to work state?
They can fire and hire at will. no explainations required. The pay is so-so if your new to the industry. No where near what you need to live out here. Expensive housing if you want to live in a decent area or close to PHX.

why dont you like Az, right to work states are bad if you dont like to work hard, you will get canned and a person that works harder will replace you.. Unions are good for some things but not all, most unions dont give you holidays or vacations but most companys in az do. the one thing I miss about union is a good retirement fund. the pay is the same for me.. good luck with your decision and enjoy the frigid weather, I'll be out on my deck enjoying the mild air.. take care

    be patient

I have also been considering chicago area for employment.
I checked in with a local in my area did not seem to bad
to get into a union. In the old days the unions dominated
all skilled trades not so much today. They want new blood
new faces.Look at it like this if they keep untrained
hacks(guys who go from trade to trade who could not care
less)from being in competetion with you for work that is
a very good thing.I meen isnt that the reason you want
to leave a right to work state.

Yeah, this right to work state stuff sucks!
I'm here in AZ also and would like to return to the midwest. Most info I found with unions would like you to be in IL first than consider you for membership. I'd rather have a job lined up before making a move.
Not sure what I'll do yet.
    Good luck!

you don't just walk into the union hall and walk out with a card. i don't think they are waiting for you.

You might want to call them to see what their requirments are. without belonging to a Union already they may not accept your previous work unless able verify your credentionals. even then you might end up starting out as an Apprentice and not a Journeyman all depends on how good your resume looks. Good Luck !
