When my wife was a Boy Scout leader she showed the boys how to take a dutch oven, put your stew fixings in it, put hot coals in a hole, put pot on coals, cover.
Go hiking and come back at night to hot stew.
Make sure you're not in bear country.
    They would be amazed.

Speaking of fishing, there is this valcanic depresion in the Jemez mountains called the Valle Grande. It's large with lots of elk. It had been prvate ranch until the Feds bought it.
I'm told I can go online and apply for a piece of the river that runs through the valle. They take jou there and you fish an area all to yourself. Almost virgin fishing. I know a guy that has gone twice. Fly fisherman.

    great camp cookin.....

I cooked up a really nice meal fishin in the mountains last weekend, with no dishes. Took a square of foil, and cut up a potatoe and threw it on. Tossed on some baby carrots, and a chunk of onion broke up. Threw in 2 tbsp of butter, and seasoned it up with blackened seasoning. Made 2 more packets like this, rolled um up, and moved the camp fire over and sat um on the coals. Had me a cold beer. Then I cut up some zuchinni and peppers, did the same thing with them, butter, seasoning, and sat um on the coals too. had me another beer. Then I made 3 more packets, each with 4 small rainbows in um, heads and tails off to fit more in the packets. Lots of butter, blackened seasoning, corn meal and flour mix, then lemon chunks. Rolled these up, set this 3 packets on the fire and had another beer. [there was a weber grill nearby so I sat the lid on over the fish to heat the tops] Felt the top of the fish and when they were hot, I pulled everything off the coals onto a picnic table, and unfolded the meal, we ate like pigs. It was damn good and waaay easy. I actually liked the trout much better this way over fried in oil like Mom used to do.
