Yes it was on a trailer. He might have been up to full speed, but it was barely a half mile from where he entered the highway. That's maybe enough of a run to get to full speed with that load. He was specifically told by his boss to avoid I-70 and to take rural roads to his destination instead. I don't have any more specific details on the incident other than what was reported in the local news. A cousin is with the Ks. Highway Patrol and served that area, but recently transferred so I lost my insider there.

I am assuming they did not have a demolition contract for the bridge?

If you look at the pics in the link, the trailer is visible in most of the pics posted. It is a tri-axle drop deck with the front or "wet" end missing, removed? still traveling?

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Must have been at speed when it hit. Don't see a trailer in the photo, maybe it was removed after the accident.

I did a search on this, still can't find more info.

The boom was high enough to just hit one of the veritcal members of the concrete 'T' forming the roadway. When it contacted the 'T', it raised up shall we say "rather sharply". The guy might have barely been up to speed, as he had only gotten onto I-70 less than a half mile from this overpass. My daughter uses this overpass to get to work, now she has a much longer route to take. All I can say is that had to be one heck of a jolt when it all came to a sudden stop. One of the jokes following this event was- "semi trailer- $45,000; excavator $280,000... bridge- priceless. Mastercard- good at thousands of locations worldwide, but not for bail money in Hays, Kansas."

Anyone have a link to this story?

Uhh Looks more like it was being transported on a trailer when this happened, other wise , yeah, the interlock should have prevented this...

But a boom lifting at 60-70Mph.... Ooooohh this is what happens...

Is it just me, or is that a really long boom for a track hoe??? Must be able to dig pretty deep trenches...

Anyone need a 23' deep trench?? Well, the equipment is a little tied up at the moment...

Tongue-in-cheek, start walkin'. Reality, don't leave the scene of the accident.

I wonder if they have enough insurance to cover the repair of the bridge? That is going to be one unhappy insurance company.

Looks to me like he got stuck under the bridge, then tried to back out from under it when the elbow was driven up through the roadway.

That a great example of hydrolics. What happens is the bouncing of the hydrolics while in transit foams up the oil and it slowly starts to expand. The driver or who ever is supposed to secure it. So while the driver is driving on his merry way, the arm or boom or whatever slowly rises and wham! It looks to me that it hooked the bridge and the forward momentum of the thing forced the arm up and through the bridge, pretty cool. Now, try and think of what was going through the minds of the truck driver and all the people driving on the bridge at that very moment.

I can't figure out how the elbow of that thing got where it is while going in the direction it was going.
