let me try this.....DO NOT go to all the union halls and sign up.
Yeah the grim truth for me is .. I wil not be able to get a school loan for 6 months due to the fact I am still paying for Devry. Pricey school it was, and was younger and alil bit dumber and not so great when it came to paying my school loan payments on time. I would love to be able to get a part time gig for the 6 months I would have to wait for a school loan. Goto Triton for either a HVAC and or Stationary Engineer certificate .. and then land a apprentice job or get my foot into one of the local Universities and or colleges around the city. BUT I am getting the impression that this is FAR from just that easy. I dont know anyone personally who could get me into a stationary position that I could depend on after all the time and effort and $$ put into it. I do have a refence for a residential kinda gig way the hell out in the burbs. Was reffered buy a friend who is into sheetmetal HVAC work. I could not get hold of this guy so i Emailed him .. Was told to call him back after i got a certificate in HVAC. Thats what started this ball rolling in this direction. BUT that is the only thing I would have going for me atm as a chance to get a HVAC gig. I am talking about about one in a half years time b4 i would be schooled and ready to start this .. that would make me 36 yrs old. apprentice new guy .. I am out of work NOW hehe. SO.. I think im gonna play it safe and go get me another job I immediaty qualify for and look into the HVAC thing alil closer for the next 6 months b4 I really choose WTH is it im gonna do with the rest of my days.
Originally posted by mrjason I talked to Triton a week ago .. was told the HVAC certificate program was 8 months if you went to school full time and took a full load. Regardless if this is true or not I found out I cannot pull off financial aid for 6 months and will probably not pursue this path. Thanks for the reply's and wish me luck. Time to pack a suitcase 8( How about a student loan?

Triton College is an excellent school, but i don't think they have an 8 month program. Each course as i remember is 4 months long, and there are up to 12 courses total. Unless you plan on crammin all the classes into two semesters...I wouldn't do that. Maybe they changed the program since I've been there. Yeah i go to triton for Hvac and they dont have an 8 month program, It takes about two years to complete everything.
have you signed up at the halls?? THAT is your first move. i don't think that they will come to you.
As a (electronics) field service tech..servicing electron microscopes. I covered 5 states. Airports and hotel rooms are what I am sick of. Triton offers a certificate program thats "about" 8 months from what I was told over the phone by admissions. They also offer a AA degree. I am hoping this will lead to a stationary engineer position at one of the local universities and or hospitals around the city. I am leaning toward the certificate program as it is faster and will go back for whatever is needed once I get my foot in the door of a job position. Union pay and benifits is the modivation here. I am and always was good at fixing things. I dont really like suit and tie corperate kiss ass america. I could go and get another traveling electronic tech position right now with no school makeing anywere from 45-65k a year but its a specilized kind of work. That really does not open doors for much other than similar work (travel) I assume HVAC will not go away any time soon. I think EE degree from Devry was not a bad choice but when it comes down to it ... Nobody has there TV's repaired anymore.. you buy a new one. Nobody troubleshoot's PC boards anymore.. you swap it.. faster and cheaper. What appeals to me about the HVAC trade is just that .. its a trade you can fall back on. I am just getting mixed reviews and signals of whats to come if i make this move. Could I wind up not being able to get into the union and go look for a 15$ an hour job?. I would probably go back to electronics tech if that were the case and would be disapointed in my choice to persue HVAC.

Welcome to the forum community. Do a search of this site to see what has already been discussed as far as what this industry has to offer. It is vast. Like Medicine. Where do you wish to specialize? Hi temp or lo temp? In house service or field service? Union or non union? Commercial or residential service? Etc., etc. what's that name for the dual 555? I forgot. I have an idea. Wanna invest some time consulting in a project of mine? Thanks
contact some of the union halls...........and sign-up.
If your electronics training takes you beyond residential wiring, it sould be a much better paying job.
Hey folks, I am a 34 yr old former electronics technition who has worked as a field service tech for the last 8 yrs. I have an AA degree in electronnics from DeVry. I am sick of travel and am looking for new work. I have been looking into HVAC tech as there seem to be allot of jobs in the Chicago area. I am about to go enroll into Triton College for the 8 month certificate program for HVAC. I am hoping to get out of school and get into a union HVAC tech position. What are my chances of finding a good stable HVAC job after I get the certificate? Do think this is a good move? why ? whynot? Also would love to hear experiences of any others who had been in this situation. Thanks ahead of time Jason
