Schools these days just tell the students they are there so they can prepare to learn....they hit the job site not knowing a thing. the trade schools in my neck of the words are a scam.

Pretty sure most guys fresh out of school would do bad at that test. They do not teach like they use to. Tech schools have become little more than money making scams that have kids thinking they will be able to start running service when they graduate, and believe me they all graduate.

Even the test in post 10 favors theory. Apprentices used to hook up with a journeyman during the day and get schooled at night. This was supposed to balance theory and practice. The handful of good techs I've known didn't wait for knowledge to be handed to them. They took it on themselves. School is never enough.
Many journeymen of the past didn't have a lot going for them either. There was a bunch of bad information out there. Beer can theory in many ways.
We all have heard comments about a young couple going into the world and people saying "They will never make it" Most do somehow.
Being an electronic engineer in my previous life, the teachers in my local tech school are pathetically lacking in theories. One ridicules comment I remember goes like this " in a well designed circuit, a load will use up all the voltage between L1 and neutral..."

Got to love political correctness. Lord knows we can't let anyone know they aren't very good or are stupid.

    3. What is subcooling and what is an average one for an air conditioner?Subcooling is not quite supercooling. See above question.
    4. What are the two most common refrigerants used in air conditioning? Freezone and Frozone
    5. What are the two kinds of metering devices in ac units. What are the differences?Metering devices are used in Canada and Europe In the U.S. we use inches and feet
    6. If and air conditioner is a big block of ice on arrival of a service call, what is the first thing you look for? Tequila and margarita mix
    7. On a service call, customer says home is hot, what is the first thing you do when you arrive?Break open the tequila and margarita mix
    8. What does 40va on a transformer mean? Not sure but I enjoyed the 3D Transformers movie
    9. Nothing is running on a service call, house is hot, what is the first 2 things you check for? Tequila and margarita mix
    10. You got to an outside condensing unit, the fan is blowing cold air off the top, what is this telling you? Fans can talk?
    11. The house isn’t cooling, inside and outside unit is running, what is the first thing you do? Why are there so many questions about tequila and margarita mix?
    12. I have an 80 deg day with an R-22 system, the pressures are reading 240 on the hi side and 50 on the low side-is there anything wrong and if there is, what is it? 80-22=58 low side is 50. I need to add 8lbs Freezone so low side will be 58

    19. How are hi-efficiency gas furnaces vented? Hopefully better than my low efficiency gas passer. I enjoy giving the wife a Dutch Oven when I vent, but she doesn't like it
    20. Which is bigger ¾ or 5/8 That's a trick question. The font for 5/8 is visually larger. I'll have to think about this one.
    21. How much cfm do I need per ton of ac-what is cfm? I know this one. Each a/c has 1 condenser fan motor
    22. How do you properly size an air conditioner for a home? How much money does the customer have?
    23. If a pressure switch is tripped on a hi-efficiency gas furnace-what might be the problem? Dutch Oven is broken
    24. Give me 6 things commonly found in a gas furnace-example burners? 6 burners
    25. What does pump down mean and how do you do it on an air conditioner? Never done it to an air conditioner before but I'd sure like to watch

I agree. That’s how I got my start. Went to school at night and rode around as a helper during the day. Picked up the trade real quick plus I got to teach some techs some things they've forgotten or got lazy on through the years.
