Sounds like a great plan. I will post some pictures when it is done. Install date is 10-18-06. So that gives me a little time to freshen up the fireplace and mantel.
Drop them at least 2 1/2". Nothing worse than the surround showing an 1/8" crack above it because the castings are irregular.
Sounds like I will drop down the new tile 2 or so inches like you said. I just wanted to make sure that was a decent idea. Yes that is the fireplace I am getting HI300, I think i listed the model number wrong in the first post. Thanks for the input guys. Bryan
Is this the unit you are getting? http://www.hampton-fire.com/Wood/Inserts/ If so, and you are getting rid of the existing black tiles anyway, just size the new tiles so they will drop down the additional 2" as Collin recommended. And ditto on the non-combustable backing. (hardi-backer, cement board, etc) With a name like that, he must be right! Another Colin.
If you don't like the marble, tear it off and put a larger marble or granite slab there. If you are going to tile it, you must use a non-combustible backer board such as micore 300 or durock to help support it where it drops down below the existing opening. Do NOT use drywall. Be aware the extra thickness may be an issue with the existing mantle.
I have a house that was built in 1940. The fireplace is rather large (I think) it is 32" high. My new Hampton IS300 wood burning insert is only 30" high. All the other measurements are good. I will be having this installed and I told them about the size diiference and they said no problem as they can install a sheet metal trim piece. I am not happy with this as the insert is all cast iron. So I want to know how I can go about resizing the opening by the 2 - 3 inches without using sheetmetal. Can I simply remove the top black trim and install a 2 inch taller peice so that it drops into the box opening to make up the difference? This would be great as I hate the look of the black marble on there. I want to replace all the black tiles as well anyway. Or could I installed a 2-3 inch cement block base to have the new insert sit on it and trim it off on the front edge? Any ideas? Am I thinking on the right page or way off here? Here is a picture. I have 3 weeks to do this before the install date. Thanks in advance!
