I have installed a few like this with high efficiency tank water heaters and first company ah, always straight ac with hydro heat, never tried it with a hp. There is an apartment complex that we do some work at that all units are ac with hydro coils tapped off the hot water coil. I have an old swinging hydro radiator at my shop that I'm thinking about piping into our water heater to knock the chill off of our sheet metal shop since we installed a 90% water heater that we changed out under warranty and fixed the leaking stainless steel tank.
I installed a number of these in hydroair applications in NY, ME and a few in OH IMO, this is the only way to go if you have a water heater that is sized properly or are willing to put in that water heater. Follow the manufactures recommendations on water heater sizing. You can get a lot more out of a water heater as far as heating capacity without increasing physical capacity but I wont go into that here. Bonus is that using your hot water heater as a heat source will keep your water heater very clean. Love this set up. Sized correctly, I have 1600 sq. ft. homes that are running this system on a 50 gallon oil fired water heater or 2 - 50 gallon Gas water heaters with degree days calculated for the area at 28 Now with this said.... I have not used them for heat pump applications. The company has a great web site that you should check out and their customer service is top notch. Give them a call on the heat pump side of the question.
First Company EVBQ (Variable Speed) as a Dual Fuel air handler? http://firstco.com/products/EVBQ.asp What are your thoughts about using the EVBQ as the air handler of a dual fuel system? The water coil acts as the the Aux/Emergency heat. No delay for defrost heat like a standard dual fuel setup, no furnace needed. Could be a good setup for southern climates with reasonable electric rates. Variable speed blower and internal water pump included. My main concerns are not enough heat from the water coil in some installations and the AHRI match of the evap coil for heat pump purposes.
