Only 50 miles out of Memphis and that's your package? 20 years ago as an apprentice I had that pay and a better benefit package in the outter burbs of DC. Look around you should be able to find a much better deal, if you're willing to relocate you'll be able to get at least 2 1/2 time what you are now plus a benefit package on top. Good luck.

I know how you feel. Not only was I feeling underpaid for a long time but I only weight a whopping 135 pounds too . I hate it when you push on your drill to force a screw in but just push yourself back instead . The pay does sound low though pay varies greatly from area to area. I have heard of guys that make similar amounts. I changed my pay, I demanded it. It worked though I could've just as easily had been out of a job too.
My genitalia weigh more than 135.
Mine equates to just over 1/2 of my total body weight......it's all relative.

    same here

I just started a new job. I quess the guy has been screwed by some former employees. He starts every body at 6 a hr. I've worked 3 days now. He told me that there was a guy that had 4 years in at another local heating company that couldn't have done half the stuff i did friday. I'm lookin foward to seeing what I'm worth in his eyes.

He pays 1/2 of insureance after 90 days.

    Well see how it goes.

With the advice and "teachings" that you have posted you sound like an extremely knowledgeable and contientious mechanic.
I believe you could easily get top pay and benefits if you were lucky enough to find an employer offering both. Go commercial.

    Good luck!

and it appears that the general concensus is 'My job sucks'

How do you go about finding out what the 'Fair Pay'
    is for your area?

Boss says I'm getting paid more than the average for our area... but its hard for me to understand since our area has 3 or 4 HVAC companies in the county.
All the other companies have one tech... the owner of the company hehe.
We are the only company in the area that has more than one tech... Boss, Me, and other tech. Woot... we're big time LoL
