Every year the public is invited to the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks to the annual Flag Day Ceremony. Every Lodge is required to hold this ceremony every year. It is quite nice and educational. Our Lodge donates new Flags to all the other non-profit organizations in this community. I can tell by reading the posts here that a lot of the folks on this site would enjoy being a part of Elkdom.
Half-staff for a 30 days after his death. To place the flag at half staff, hoist it to the peak for an instant and lower it to a position half way between the top and bottom of the staff. The flag is to be raised again to the peak for a moment before it is lowered. On Memorial Day the flag is displayed at half staff until noon and at full staff from noon to sunset. The flag is to be flown at half staff in mourning for designated, principal government leaders and upon presidential or gubernatorial order. When used to cover a casket, the flag should be placed with the union at the head and over the left shoulder. It should not be lowered into the grave. The flag should be raised briskly and lowered slowly and ceremoniously. Ordinarily it should be displayed only between sunrise and sunset. It should be illuminated if displayed at night.
Today, June 14th is National Flag Day. In my travels today I noticed a conspicuous lack of flags and a bit of confusion out there as to its proper display. In my neighborhood it's only the same folks who have had flags up all along and some of the businesses with huge flagpole didn't even have theirs out today. To make matters worse, it seems it wasn't clear if they should still be at half staff for Reagan or all the way up for Flag Day. Just an observation.
