I suffered for years with what I thought was simple GERD or Reflux. I went through a period of time when I was eating Tums and Rolaids almost every 15 minutes. At the age of 40, I started having major pains in my chest. I had everything from a stress test to an endospcopy and was finally diagnosed with Barrett's Esopagus. It is similar to GERD or Reflux with many of the same symptoms. While you probably don't have that, what my doctor told me may be of a little help. Try these things and you may find more relief.

Avoid eating anything within three hours before bedtime.

Avoid smoking and tobacco products. Nicotine in the blood weakens the LES. LES is the Lower Esophageal Sphincter.

Reduce consumption of fatty foods, milk, chocolate, mints, caffeine, carbonated drinks, citrus fruits and juices, tomato products, pepper seasoning, and alcohol (especially red wine).

Eat smaller meals. Avoid tight clothing or bending over after eating.

Review all medications with the physician. Certain drugs can actually weaken the LES.

Elevate the head of the bed or mattress 6 to 8 inches. This helps to keep acid in the stomach. Pillows by themselves are not very helpful. Wedging pillows under the head tends to bend the body at the waist which can push more fluid back up into the esophagus.

Lose weight if overweight. This may relieve upward pressure on the stomach and LES.

I have been taking Prilosec. Nexium or Prevacid for the last 7 years and the improvement in my life is very significant. You probably don't need something like this but once again it may help.

I also wouldn't advise self diagnosing. Good Luck

I had what all thought for years was reflux. At the time it was the most popular diagnosis and I remember one Dr. taking all of about 30sec to look at a berium test to start me on this pill go round.Worked ok,but what was eventually discovered was I had a whopper case of gallstones. Finally got hooked up with the right Dr.,and got repaired.Symptoms are the same, with UN-B pain at top of your ab,and even through to your back.Pain would last until I could knock it down with an antacid, and this was before most of these new pills were around.Lets face it,because of our trade and all that it entails,we dont drink enuf water, eat fast somewhat fat food and drink too much.Am so much better without my gallblader!

It day # 3 on zantac & I love it.

Try not to lie down on couch, sit up watch tv

I agree with that but zantac can help alot.

I've had it, still got it, and trying many of the remedies

"Caffiene, nicotine, posture and overeating opens the cardiac spinchter and acid comes up."

This seems to be closest. I don't want to stay on the purple pill or zantac.

Less coffee: (used to be many many cups per day.) now: 0
once in awhile have a cup as a treat/reward.

Don't smoke: gave it up 15 yrs ago.

Try not to lie down on couch, sit up watch tv. started exercise program with home gym. I think too much horizontal without partner is not good.

Began to believe the "chew food very well". Heard it recently and saw it here. Will start to do this also.

Have had less problem with this and less attacks at night.

Definitely wonder about the cancer of the throat. Uncle died of this......not pretty.

Only over-the-counter remedy that has worked for me is Prilosec OTC. It has been a miracle! I can work all day bending over- NO acid reflux!!
