Well, this is probably a stupid question, but...
We have three gas fireplaces on three levels one chimney- the below grade fireplace has never been used. My husband just installed a stereo system in the basement and now I hear everything coming up from that room through our upper fireplaces. (it is loud!) any ideas of what can be done? the flue is closed- thank you in advance for any suggestions...

Trying to decide whether to replace Thermopile or RV8310 Valve?

I have a Vermont Castings gas fireplace with a Honeywell RV8310 RF valve.
Here is what is happening...
Sometimes it works fine for hours.
Sometimes the pilot goes out.
Sometimes the unit calls for heat and the fan goes on, but the main burner does not light, and the pilot is still lit.
The pilot is always fairly easy to light and leave in the "pilot" position, but sometimes when I turn the knob to "on", there is a click and the pilot goes out.

Here is what I have checked and tested...
Both thermopiles read 600+ mV open circuit. I tested this with the pilot on, while holding the pilot light button in.
When testing them in circuit, they fluctuate between 370-420 mV.

When the pilot is lit, and the unit is in the "on" position, the red LED flashes once about ever 1.5 seconds. It does this even with no batteries in the remote, so it is not getting commands from the remote. According to my manual, it should only flash when it receive a valid code from the remote or if there is an error. I am not getting any error codes as described in the manual.

I have cleaned the thermopiles with no luck.

The question is, do I replace the thermopiles or the valve. The symptom that concerns me most is when the pilot remains lit and the unit is calling for heat and the fan is on, but the main burner is not. This symptom seems atypical for indicating bad thermopiles.

All suggestions appreciated.

So with a heating season under my belt, I have come to my first slow period and don't mind it at all. The pocket book ain't as fat but the fishing isn't bad either.

Don't get me wrong I am out there trying to spur up business be it dryer vent, open fireplace chimney sweep, pitching a new unit etc.. but its slowing down at work

quite a bit. Understand that if the boss ain't making money I should be out doing what I can to promote, cultivate, and do my part to make money for the shop.

Taking it in stride I guess. What the office staff are doing now is calling all the clients over the last 40 years of business lists to book spring/summer

spring/summer discount services. It helps and things pick up in mide June etc.. So taking the N.A.T.E exam early June, because its a goal I have had since trade.

then will start to study/invest into the NFI Certs (thanks for the info Hearthman). Hope you guys are out doing well and the fishing is as good.

I have a homeowner with a problem when burning his fireplaces with the doors open. The fireplace does not smoke at the opening, but odors are being drawn in at the conditioned attic. The house is tight, although no blower door test done.

Some of the odors are smoke related, but the smoke alarms do not go off. Some of the odors are sewer gas. The appear about an hour after the fireplace is used.

I advised the homeowner to open a window when burning the fireplace to see if this eliminates the smells. Assuming it does, is there anything other than opening a window that will work?
