I just installed a new gas fireplace this week. My question is: Can I use a regular 120 volt switch or do I need a millivolt switch? Also I'm about 3ft short of wire were I want to place the switch. Can I splice in using the proper gage wire? Thanks for your help! Jim

Yes, use a regular 120 volt switch.
No, avoid splices where possible. Run a single length of wire if possible, because this minimizes poor electrical connections and millivolt losses, both of which can be problems.
