my brother did 30 years in the PO tractor/truck repairs, and could never figure out who built them?

Grumman builds them, and when ups is done with them they're scrapped.. Never re-sold. The entire design of the truck is proprietary.

You had me a little worried there, Bob. I actually had to do some research.

Grumman became Grumman-Olson, went bankrupt, and ended up as Morgan-Olson.

Good homework. I toured the plant in Sturgis Michigan, really cool how they build those trucks.

.....UPS calls them "package cars". i had a brain fart...not "pie wagon". i used to work at UPS in the early 90's. they don't call them trucks. UPS doesn't allow it's employees to where any of there clothing outside of work. they are REALLY big on image. there trucks are washed EVERYDAY.

An acquaintence of mine has the contract for local UPS mechanical repairs. He says the old brown units are well built and have to be to put up with the abuse they get. However, he also says the Sprinters are the biggest POS they ever came up with. He claims they might be OK for someone who owns and drives his own, but these babies get really abused and don't hold up at all compared to the older units.

Not only that- gas vs. diesel, but at every stop, UPS drivers are supposed to shut off engines. Talk about wear and tear on engines. Now, if the guy is at a major warehouse or office complex unloading for an extended time, I see nothing wrong with that. But, a quick stop at a residence for <1 minute

Come to think about that, you are right.. They do turn off the engines every stop they do, and even the USPS.

My old roomate works for a company that repairs and rebuilds the local UPS trucks. Their yard is right up the road from a shop where I worked for 4 years. UPS has a strict policy that any truck that is beyond repair or even not worth repairing be completely destroyed and scraped. This is because years ago they used to sell them off after so long or so many miles like many fleets, then one day someone got in an accident with an old UPS truck and killed one or more people. UPS got named in the legal action and it took years and tons of money for them to get clear. They swore never again.

UPS don't like to dispose of the old trucks because they follow the KISS policy, keep it simple the older trucks don't have many emisison control components, easy and cheap to repair.

The Sprinters are made by Mercedes Benz, sold in this country as Freightliner Sprinter and Dodge Sprinter. After this year they are dropping the Freightliner name and going with Dodge Sprinter only.

The reason they are not sold as a Mercedes Benz in this country is because the M-B brand is considered a luxury brand.

What would our customers think if we pulled up into their driveways to service their Goodman and we were driving a Mercedes branded vehicle, hence the Freightliner/Dodge moniker.

I always supposed that when UPS was done with a truck, they simply left it parked in the middle of the street and abandonned it. The usual method of parking, they just don't come back.

UPS trucks are about the most basic trucks I have ever seen: None of them have A/C, they are all standard transmissions, and all they have for a heater is a tiny defroster outlet. I don't even think they have radios in them.

I heard they get sent to a company in Atlanta to be destroyed and are never resold.
