View Full Version : Defrost Timer?

I have some general questions about the defrost timer.

1. I thought (gets me in trouble alot) that the defrost cycle could be initiated by jumping the defrost pins on the defrost timer board. This has worked on some units. I installed a Goodman last week and when I jumped the test pins the unit would not go into defrost. I called tech support and they informed me that I had to also disconnect and jump two other leads, and then jump the test pins. Then, when the machine went into defrost, I had to disconnect the jumped leads to keep it in defrost. In the end, we determined that the board was bad, and now I wonder If I shorted the board by using the wrong technique.

My question is, is it necessary to call tech support before I put a unit into defrost, or am I missing something? I did not see anything in the manual to address this issue.

2. When you install a heat pump in the summer, should you put the system into manual defrost as a part of checking the machine? When I install or repair a system, I run it through a heat and cool cycle. Now I think I should run it through a defrost cycle as well.

No I think you are find. I came a cross one like that and though I shorted it out. I had to read the notes on wire diagram 4 time to get it right. I have no clue why that is set up that way.

When you jump the test pins it speeds up the heat/defrost cycle 60X normal speed.
