We were working on a Scotsman ice maker model #CME256AE1A. When we plugged the infarred bin senser into the board it would shut the machine down. We removed and cleaned the sensors with a q-tip and rubbing alchol and re-installed them. Started the unit and it shut down again. I removed the sensors held them together, lined them up and started the unit. It ran just fine. We checked the voltage coming out of the board and we read 4.5 volts. Is this sufficient voltage? It seemed as the sensors got farther from each other they could not read or see each other. Once they reached a certain distance apart the sensors would assume the bin is full and shut it down. Thanks

If nothing is in the way down there in the bin, change the controller, especially if it has an older black one, get the new blue one, and change the eye's too.

The Scotsman bin sensor lens will sometimes get cloudy and so its vision isn't so good any more.....just like us when we get old. ;)
Take Dice's advice and change out the eyes. The new eyes don't work with the black controller so if that's what you have, change that too for a new blue one.

Yes, it does have the black controller. The eyes are in large black brackets. The controller was putting out 4.5 volts, is this normal voltage output?

We told you how to fix it.

I'm assuming when you say the controller is "putting out 4.5 volts" that you were checking for voltage at the connector for the eyes.
This is an input, not an output and there's no useful diagnostic info that you can get from that voltage reading. The only thing you need to know is if the board is getting 24v from the transformer.
Just get new eyes and a new blue controller. Read the instructions. The new controller must be set up for the machine you have by dialing in the correct setting on the rotary switch on the LH side of the controller. For a CME256 set it to "0". On power up there's a little diagnostics routine that flashes the green lights to verify that it's set properly. Initially all the lights come on then it displays the light code for your unit. (Strangely, the CME256's code is no lights).

Lots of things to check.....your training in the ice making and refrigeration should guide you.

One of the eyes have an extra plug connector in the wiring that is hidden inside the unit until you remove them completely. As I was replacing the eyes I found corrosion in that plug on the old one. The new set of eyes worked. The machine is working fine.
