View Full Version : Am I the only one that gets disturbed about this?

This from my favorite blogger:
Houston's police chief on Wednesday proposed placing surveillance cameras in apartment complexes, downtown streets, shopping malls and even private homes to fight crime during a shortage of police officers.
[...]
Building permits should require malls and large apartment complexes to install surveillance cameras, Hurtt said. And if a homeowner requires repeated police response, it is reasonable to require camera surveillance of the property, he said.
Andy Teas with the Houston Apartment Association said that although some would consider cameras an invasion of privacy, "I think a lot of people would appreciate the thought of extra eyes looking out for them."
The kicker is the Police Chief's justification, which is tired cliche when it comes from someone like -- oh, I don't know -- Ben Shapiro. But it becomes downright frightening when coming from the police chief a major freakin' city:
"I know a lot of people are concerned about Big Brother, but my response to that is, if you are not doing anything wrong, why should you worry about it?"
Golly, if only James Madison had thought of that!
In all seriousness? Putting the whole Big Brother thing aside, that response all by itself calls out for this jerk's termination. It reveals a complete and utter lack of understanding of and respect for the Constitution. And it's coming from the guy in charge of the police force charged with securing the rights of the people who live in Houston. How could a competent city council keep this guy on the job?
-----------------------------------------------------------
ITS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME!! If people keep agreeing to the "if you are not doing anything wrong, why should you worry about it?" Line we will be in big trouble!!!

If you are not doing anything wrong in a public place, why should it bother you that someone may be watching you? If you want privacy, you go to a private place.
By the way, you shouldn't be rubbing your eyes like that...go rinse off your face before you get pink eye.

It's for the children......watch your wallet when that comes up.
One small right or freedom at a time, and no one can see the big picture. I didn't know I was here to be protected and raised by my goverment.....I'm a loner and don't need ,nor want, their "help".

They say if you put a frog in water and increase the temperature of that water slowly, the frog will gradually cook to death without ever producing a survival reaction to protect itself. Because the change of temperature is so gradual and insidious, the frog doesn’t realize death is encroaching.

Since the days when "eaves dropping" actually referred to those standing under roof eaves to spy on others, and even way before, we have been under survailence in one form or another.
In other words; We have been setting in hot water for so long and still survive, we should be used to it.
What if they put up a sign that says
You are in a public place.
You might be taped for your own protection.
I am frequenty glad whe I see a survalience camara around. At least they might be able to catch the guy that robbed or killed me.
......Behind Winston's back the voice from the telescreen was still babbling away about pig-iron and the overfulfilment of the Ninth Three-Year Plan. The telescreen received and transmitted simultaneously. Any sound that Winston made, above the level of a very low whisper, would be picked up by it, moreover, so long as he remained within the field of vision which the metal plaque commanded, he could be seen as well as heard. There was of course no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any given moment. How often, or on what system, the Thought Police plugged in on any individual wire was guesswork. It was even conceivable that they watched everybody all the time. But at any rate they could plug in your wire whenever they wanted to. You had to live -- did live, from habit that became instinct -- in the assumption that every sound you made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every movement scrutinized....

Is this the world you want your children and grandchildren to live in one day. Cause if you all insist that giving up your freedom for the false feeling of security that goverment promises you, the scenerio above will be fulfilled.

If you dont like cameras looking at you, a can of spray paint should do the job.

.
But the Police is contemplating installing these cameras in peoples HOMES as well... Now Isnt that a private place?
They have been using cameras in Europe in public areas for many years, to quite some success as well. I dont mind theone in public places that are monitored by Police officials... Private companies, I dont kow about that though...
