Are packaged units becoming more commonly installed in new homes than split systems? That seems to be case in my area. How are buliders/developers justifying using them when lot sizes are getting so small. I've seen some installed practically butting up against the neighbors.

Just curious.

I live in Memphis & I see very few package units installed on new construction. Most of the construction here uses slabs instead of conventional foundations. I will tell ya this though. If a house has a finished upstairs thats the same size as the downstairs. Its a whole lot easier to have a package unit & the duct run underneath than it is trying to figure out how to get ducts to all the rooms.

t527ed, I believe you are right on. It must be a regional thing.

hvac hero, good point re. slabs and conventional foundations. Very few homes are built on slabs here in Nashville.
